Has anyone tried those pillows they advertise on T.V? Best pillows? I have also seen them at some county fairs. My wife loves pillows (we have way too many) and she was looking at those, but it is hard for me to buy their claims.

I don't have any experience with the pillows that you are asking about. I did look at the website and found some issues that would bother me. I do have some neck issues so pillows are very important to me.

1. I couldn't find anywhere the filling material that is in the pillow
2. Most of the information on the main 'about' page is just marketing 'stories'
3. You can see a lot of reviews on Amazon do not agree with the claims about this pillow:
www.amazon.com/My-Pillow-Standard-Queen-...TF8&showViewpoints=1

It seems that the claims made about this pillow are... exaggerated at best. The pillow may work for some, but according to the reviews for it on Amazon about half give it only a 1 star rating. If you are just looking for ratings on this pillow, the Amazon review page would help you.

I hope that you find something that works for you and if you do purchase this pillow, please review it here. :D

Oh, I wanted to add that from the small sampling of Amazon reviews I read, it seems this pillow is just a shredded foam pillow. One reviewer "AKoster" states: "The pillow filling is comprised of small irregular bits of foam--the surface of the pillow is not smooth-looking, but I don't find it to be an issue at all"......"The bits do allow for flattening or fluffing the pillow to your liking, and it holds that shape pretty well."

You can get quality "Made in USA" shredded foam pillows off Amazon for much less then the offering from "My Pillow".

Here's some links to some shredded latex pillows on Amazon, but you can find many other types of shredded foam pillows there as well.

www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Dreams-Shredded-...hredded+latex+pillow

www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003DKL1MK/ref=oh_o05_s01_i00_details

www.amazon.com/Natural-Shredded-pillow-p...hredded+latex+pillow

www.amazon.com/Malouf-Natural-Shredded-T...eywords=latex+pillow

If you are struggling with neck issues like me, you might want to look into pillows that provide cervical spine support (if you sleep on your side or back). My doctor and physical therapist both recommended a contour pillow, but I had a hard time trying to find one that was the right height with the perfect amount of firmness/softness.

Hi Rskman,

As Coventry mentioned ... these pillows are basically just shredded polyurethane foam. I read the patent application (and the video describes it more generally as well) and they use 3 different average sizes of small, medium, and large foam chunks of certain average sizes and in a certain proportion mixed together and the idea is that each size of shredded foam fills in the gaps produced by the larger sizes. The patent application describes the average sizes of chunks used, their proportion, and even the type of polyfoam used (1.8 - 1.9 lb density and 27 - 35 ILD). The idea is that it can be fluffed during sleep as the sleep position changes and then conforms to the body shape because the larger chunks will stay put and hold the shape while the smaller chunks fill in the gaps. The cover also uses what they call "hypoallergenic paint" which is some type of latex paint which is used to mask the feel of any sharp edges of the foam chunks. They use open celled foam which is reticulated foam which has very open cells so it can be washed and dried (like polyfoam sponges).

As Coventry mentioned ... the claims are exaggerated and based on how foam chunks of different types and sizes settle and are not particularly unique to this pillow. They can be washed because reticulated foam (like sponges) will dry faster than other types of foam (like outdoor foam or dri-fast foam). At the prices they are charging ... you are basically buying a story rather than some amazing material or "magic ingredient" and I think the reviews that Coventry mentioned suggest the same.

@Coventry ... did you ever happen to find the knitted wool covers you were looking for?

Funny you should mention that Pheonix, since I'm knitting them right now. Well, not while I type... that would be pretty amazing though. :)

I'm playing around with the weight of yarn and gauge. Wool is a must for it's temperature regulating properties with a plain stockinette stitch for stretchability and lack of possible facial imprints. Once I've gotten a good swatch knitted up I'll start on the pillowcase and post pictures, observations and any befuddlement's I have here.

Once I made up my mind about knitting the cases myself, I gave up looking for them. I really like knitting and it's satisfying for me to futz around with things like this. I'm hoping to get them done in a week or two depending on my distraction levels and other projects that elbow in too. :)

Re: Pillows? 07 Sep 2012 15:44 #23

Great thread on pillows.

I have been using a buckwheat hull pillow for over 20 years and love it. I have some cervical spine issues that I go to the chiropractor for. I like that I can shape the pillow to any size I need for neck/head support no matter what position I am in. I know this type of pillow is not for everyone. I bought my wife one and she was not crazy about it.

I had tried some of the foam neck support/chiropractic pillows on the market before I purchased the buckwheat one, and was very unhappy with them, they also were not cheap. They were either very uncomfortable or flattened out after a few months of use.
My wife also tried a wool-filled pillow at one point, but that flattened out after about a year.

I had a good laugh when I read about ZhivagosGirl’s 50 year old pillows. We also have 2 feather/down pillows that must be at least 50 years old that I cannot let go of. I think I used them as a child and inherited them from my parents. They are as flat as a pancake, but I don’t actually use mine as a pillow, but more as a neck/ chest warmer when I am sleeping on my back, and as a side/chest support when sleeping on my side, stomach or somewhere in between. I can’t even imagine what they look like inside.

The reason I searched for the pillow thread, is because my wife is having some neck issues since we got our new latex mattress. Up until now, she has been using a feather pillow for the past few years and has been very happy with it. Now she is searching for a new type of pillow.

A promise I made to myself years ago...IF I find a "perfect" pillow I will buy the store out. I had that pillow a few years ago and kept saying - "I'm going next weekend to buy the rest of them off the shelf". I never did, and subsequently never found the pillow again since it was discontinued. It was a foam pillow at WalMart for $30-40. The next one I find that hit's the sweet spot will be hoarded!

I completely understand the sentiment :)

There are a couple of pillows that I've been trying lately. The first one is a zoned talalay latex pillow from Malouf

Because I'm a side sleeper ... I got the thicker one but also the plush version because I like sinking into my pillow. While I don't find it "bouncy" so much ... like all latex it kind of "assists" or "encourages" free movement (and I can understand how some people wouldn't like this).

I just wanted to pass along additional thanks on this pillow reference. While doing my mattress shopping at Original Mattress Factory, I noticed that the most comfortable pillow they had was the higher loft latex pillow from Rejuvinite. While the OMF pricing on that pillow was quite good, I ended up getting the high loft zoned pillow (but the firm, not plush model) from Malouf via Amazon. I've now slept on it three nights and like it quite a bit. There is a small odor, but it is decreasing every night. While it -is- a little bouncy, I find that when laying my head on the pillow, which is on the mattress, it turns into a nice smooth support platform -- it does not feel too bouncy at that point.

Buckwheat pillow should be the best. But it seems to demand such a high premium if you want even a half decent sized one. Too much for something made out of a waste product.

Anyway, I settled on a pair filled with inch cubed memory foam, giving you all the flexibility to set whatever shape and size you want. They once throw them at people in Ikea for $4.99

it seems waterbase pillows got overlooked here ...

i wish there was more choice with the top layer though - because for now it seems its either dacron or down.

also i wish they made them waveless like modern waterbeds - although i don't think waves would be nearly as much of a problem in a pillow as with a waterbed i still see no reason not to use a technology that already exists.

basically it's a shame more companies aren't trying to develop this idea ...

so i gave up trying to find a pillow for myself, but i already had the knowledge and mother's day was coming up and my grandma has been telling me that she read that high pillows are good for the brain and she is keeping a towel under her pillow to make it taller so i figure - i'll get my grandma a taller pillow for mother's day, i go on Amazon and then i accidentally see this:

www.amazon.com/Customizable-Wool-wrapped...-8&keywords=shredded

damn ! that's just about exactly what i was looking for - FOR MYSELF !

not only is organic cotton over wool over latex precisely the combination i wanted but most importantly - this pillow is adjustable ! that is you can take out extra latex to customize the height to exactly how high you want your head ! i have been looking for a pillow where you can remove some of the latex without any luck and then i just stumble on this accidentally !

but damn it costs 5 times as much as Dreamfoam pillow but on the other hand it IS adjustable and if you're going to go for adjustable pillow i would much rather go for Latex than buckwheat !

?

damn king size is $237 with shipping - that's more than all Tempurpedic pillows except the Grand. i was really planning to spend more like $60 on a pillow ...

hm this one is also a definite maybe:

www.amazon.com/Natural-Fluffed-Shredded-...ustable+latex+pillow

doesn't have the wool, but that should make it softer. has adjustable latex fill and removable / washable stretch knit organic cotton cover.

and is $100 less !
