Stearns and Foster

Hi, question for anyone... Has anyone had experiences or heard of how good or bad Stearns and Foster mattresses are? They are sold as more luxurious mattresses but reviews on Consumer affairs or in general have been that their durability is atrocious. They sell these mattresses at most stores here in Canada as one of the top of the line mattresses. Based on feel in the store, they feel great. Just don't want to be stung if they only last for a year or two before the springs lose their resiliency.

Back in the day S&F used to make a high quality mattress. Unfortunately now they're more driven by their bottom line and shareholder value than by a commitment to making a quality product. I purchased one of their top models a few years ago and learned the hard way, as it went from a luxurious feeling mattress to a back killer in only a few months as the comfort layers softened. Of course that's not covered by their warranty since there was not a measurable impression greater than 1.5" with no weight on the mattress.

My experience is just one data point and by itself statistically insignificant, but if you search a bit you'll find endless similar complaints from other buyers. They use cheap foams which are of a low density resulting in their lack of durability, so they initially feel great but don't last long without losing their support. You'd be much better served by seeking out a higher quality product where the foam densities are specified instead of being hidden, and by dealing with a smaller independent manufacturer like a trusted members of this forum.

Thanks Sweet Dreams, that's too bad... out of all the mattresses displayed in stores, S&F definitely feels the best and most comfortable for me. Such a shame!

Yes i was quite skeptical about their quality when I did an online search. For brick and mortar stores in Canada (Alberta specifically) what mattresses would you maybe recommend trying out as far as quality and durability? KIngsdown? For me I think pillow tops or eurotops feel the most comfortable. But I do have back issues so i need proper durable support.

@stmslpr - Unfortunately most mattresses available in Canada are different than those sold in the US, many even being unique Canadian brands. So I'm unfamiliar with them to be able to make any such recommendations. Sorry... I'd suggest contacting a Trusted Member of this forum if any are located in your area. I did own a Kingsdown many years ago and it had similar durability problems, but that wouldn't necessarily apply to their current lineup or what they offer in Canada.
Good luck and regards, - Bill
