9" Dunlop Latex Mattress on boxspring or slatted bed (3" apart)? 21 Oct 2013 21:53 #1

Hello,

Does anyone place their latex mattress on box springs on top of slats? Does this change the feel? We are wanting to ditch our box for aesthetic reasons, but wonder if we'll like the feel better with it.

Advice?

Hi buttercupbelly,

Latex mattresses generally do best with a firm non flexing slatted foundation with a distance between the slats of no more than 3" and preferably less. There are a few exceptions generally for a thinner latex mattress where it is specifically designed to be used with a box spring (with springs that flex) and you test the specific combination.

Post #3 here and post #2 here have more information about foundations and box springs and which would generally be used under different types of mattresses.

Using a different type of foundation (flexing vs non flexing) than the one you test the mattress on can certainly change the feel and performance of the mattress.

I feel that one goal of 'going Latex' is to ditch the innerspring/boxspring model in favor of a mattress on a platform... for aesthetics and economy... a better bedding system. So try it!

If you have a 100% Latex mattress, boxsprings are probably not making it more functional and could be making it less supportive.

If your old box spring was a true coil box spring or a torsion modular system, the mattress will feel a bit firmer if placed upon a slatted base where the slats are flat, firm and reinforced. If your slatted base is the bowed style, the mattress will feel similar to being on a torsion modular foundation. Phoenix provided some excellent links. The slatted construction is nice as it promotes air circulation versus a flat plywood deck. Whatever style of foundation you use, be sure that the slats have some sort of center reinforcement to prevent the mattress from sagging in the middle.
