Anyone have experience with Sleep EZ latex beds vs Tempurpedic? 18 Jan 2014 09:52 #1

We recently purchased a Contour Select 10" firm Tempurpedic bed at Mattress Firm and are not happy with the bed. We were looking for a firm bed, thinking that meant firm support. I have a bad back and need support, my husband likes firm (he would be happy sleeping on the floor). From the very first night I have had terrible stiffness and pain, sometimes waking me up several times during the night. Although we love the initial feel of the bed, we feel like our hips sink too far into the bed after it warms. We are still within the exchange/refund period, and were considering exchanging. After research on this site, I am realizing that none of the beds they carry may be the best option for us. I am considering visiting the Sleep EZ showroom in Tempe, AZ before going back to Mattress firm. Has anyone else gone from Tempurpedic to Sleep EZ and what are your thoughts or recommendations?

One benefit of the Sleep EZ beds is that you can tailor firmness for each of you.

As for the differences in each material, Phoenix goes over them in these articles:

How to find your perfect mattress . It's a great article that goes into the pro's and cons of different material.

These articles go into more detail:

Memory foam - pros and cons

Latex - pros and cons

Finally, it comes down to what is comfortable to you.

We just had out Tempurpedic picked up by Mattress Firm. It was really comfortable but the smell wouldn't go away. They were great to deal with and have no problem recommending them. We stopped by SleepEZ last week. The guy there was very, very helpful. They do have mattresses to try but it isn't a very high end showroom environment, even a little musty. We are going to shop a couple of the other stores in Phoenix this next week. I was worried about the springy feel of latex and he educated & helped me with that. I liked what I tried but want to be sure. I will try to let you know what we find out later this week.

My major concern was the springy feel latex has given me whenever I tried it before. Because I am 6'4" and 245 and mostly a side sleeper & disabled, the guy at SleepEZ suggested that I try a firmer support system (medium top layer, firm middle layer and extra firm bottom layer). My wife is about half my weight and he suggested a softer set up for her.

What is nice is that you can do her side one way and my side another. I am not totally sold on latex yet, but am getting closer. My major holdup is being able to return it if it doesn't work. That is one reason I bought from Mattress Firm, the money back guarantee. All the other places only allow you to trade in for a different mattress that they carry, which I am sure you know. There is a place in the north valley that has a 2 month return policy and I am hoping to get there on Monday after my Dr. appt.

Please let me know if you find anything out here in the valley as well. We would appreciate it.

Thanks,
Karen and Doug

Karen and Doug,
Did you return your mattress outright? If so how easy was it to get your money back? I am assuming they would try pretty hard to get you to try another rather than lose their commission?

We went back to Mattress fIrm last night and looked at some other beds. As I learned on this website I tried to ask about the construction of the beds, asking if they had any cutaways or spec sheets. The salesman said they don't, the companies don't do those anymore due to cost. I thought that was a crappy answer as they should be able to tell me what exactly the beds are made with.

Also Karen and Doug,
You mention the other places not having a return policy, but the Sleep EZ website says they have a 90 days exchange policy and a 90 day money back guarantee. Was there another reason you did not like their store (besides the musty showroom?). Or are you just not sure on the latex yet? I have yet to test a latex bed. We stopped at Bed Mart last night to ask if they had any latex (Mattress Firm doesn't) but the saleslady there says they don't because the quality and durability is not as good as the memory foam. That confused me because most of the info I am getting about latex says the exact opposite. I am now really leery of the chain store salespeople after reading this website. Really wish I had come across this before making our purchase.

Yes, I went in and said sorry but the smell was to much. They have had that issue before. I had been in contact with them over the month so they knew we tried everything. The have that 100 day comfort guarantee. We actually bought a resale which they aren't supposed to allow returns on, but before we bought it I made sure I had 30 days. They were actually really good about the return. That was EXCELLENT customer service. I will go back and refer people, but I will also suggest this site and local, smaller retailers as well.

If you want to talk directly I think I can do a private message and give my phone number, but not sure how yet.

If you are within your 100 days they will take it back, but they do charge a $75 or $79 charge, which I completely understand. I did lead them into thinking we would buy from them, but did say we are looking at latex mattresses. They were very understanding. I can't say that enough.

I must not have seen the 90 money back on the website. I did see the 90 comfort guarantee and he said that allows us to swap out the comfort levels without charge, not money back. I will need to double check with him. My wife has his business card but I know he is the owner's nephew and a Washington Redskins fan - as am I. He was great! He said they don't have people visit very often, that most of their business is internet and phone based. The parking there is a bit tight as you have to turn quickly into their small lot. Traffic was slow enough that I backed in.

I remember years ago when we bought our 1st memory foam mattress it seemed like all the stores had some form of latex. Now I can't find any in the mainline stores. I personally think that is because they can't quickly sell (and store) the different comfort levels. Just at Sleep EZ there are 4 different comfort levels and you can combine any 3 or 4 of them depending on the thickness of the mattress. I appreciate that he said the 12" is probably overkill for most people. I gravitate towards the more expensive because I do know that quality does cost, but will last.

After reading this site it reminded me that these nice mattress stores pay a pretty penny for their showrooms and the commissions are pretty high for the salespeople. I have always heard that there is incredible markup in the mattress industry, even before this site. I was in retail and wholesale many years ago so I know that sales and operating costs are figured into the profit margin. Most of these stores are in nice locations and nice new stores. That costs you and me.

Right now my wife and I are sleeping in 2 different rooms. Her on the twin memory foam mattress we got from MF and me on a foam roll-out on the floor in our master since we had MF pick up our old Cal King bed. We are not going to rush though. I want this to be right. I need it to be right. I have had 5 back surgeries and a few others thrown in.

FYI, I am going to Latexpedic on Camelback tomorrow morning around 9am and one one 7th street right after before I get to my Dr. appt. Then the one near Deer Valley afterwards and probably stop at EZ on the way home. We live in Gilbert.
