2 Sided Latex 26 Mar 2014 17:11 #1

Hey Phoenix,

I bought a used sleep # from a friend over 10 years ago. My husband and I set it @ 95...we like it firm.
The top layer is wearing out so we sink to the middle causing me hip issues. Not to mention, when the weather changes so does the # we are sleeping on :(
So yes, it's time to find something new!

Love your site! I've been studying it for several weeks now and I have learned so much about mattresses!
I had no idea this could be so complicated.
You have already saved many $$$$ in mistakes!

I have a few questions you might be able to help me with.

After trying several stores you've mentioned in Kansas City, we think  we like the Latex 2 sided mattress from Hawn.
We would be putting it on their platform because the med-firm (26-28 ILD) latex was too soft for us on the box springs.

We are side and back sleepers, 5'6" 160 lbs and 5'11" 165 lbs

We love the Novaform 3" gel memory foam we bought from Costco for our other bed.
My first question is, we were wondering if it would defeat the purpose of getting latex if we put memory foam on top? As we like the firmness and durability of the latex, we like sinking into the memory foam
(only so far) as well.
Maybe when the gel foam wears out we can replace it with a softer latex topper.

My other question,
The cover on this 2 sided mattress is 1/2" Dacron fiber poly foam and 1" "High Resilience" polyfoam. (That's what Mark told me :) )
Could this cover have problems with dust mites down the road?

The price seemed to be good $1400+. for the queen set

If you have other suggestions, we are all ears!!!

Thanks again for taking the time to help us! I'm pointing my friends to your site....or just teaching them what I've learned :)
It's kinda fun when you know what your looking for B)

Not at all. The combination of materials that you use in the top layers of a sleeping system are a personal preference and each person can have a very different combination of materials that they prefer. There are many people that like a combination of memory foam and latex as their comfort layers because it can provide a combination of the "feel" of both materials with the latex adding some resilience (compared to thicker layers of memory foam) without the feeling of being "trapped" in the mattress which can happen with thicker layers of memory foam by itself. As you mentioned .. using a topper also gives you the flexibility to replace it (with another memory foam topper or a different type of topper if you want to experiment with a different combination) without having to replace the entire mattress because it will likely soften and break down before the rest of the mattress. A topper will also add to the durability of the layers below it.

Any material can harbor dust mites (fibers more than foam because there is more room or "living space" in between the fibers) but if you use a good mattress protector then it will protect your mattress from the skin cells they need to feed on and multiply.

If you have other suggestions, we are all ears!!!

If you followed the steps in the tutorial post, did some careful and objective testing, you know the specifics of all the materials inside it, and the Hawn Mattress is the best of your "finalists" based on the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you ... then it would make a great choice and of course you would have the additional durability benefits of a two sided mattress as well (as long as you regularly flip and turn it).
