"Zoned" Latex Mattresses (FloBeds and Cozyzone) -- Anything to it? 02 Jan 2015 20:07 #1

I've been reading more about latex mattresses and recently discovered "zoning" whereby the various core latex are segmented into different body "zones" (head, shoulders, core, etc.) and have different firmness accordingly.

Usually (always?) this is part of the foundation and I wondered if it really actually mattered.

Thoughts?

Hi idlewild,

Zoning can be part of any layer or component in a mattress but it's more common in support layers.

When someone has more challenging circumstances or finds it more difficult to find a mattress that is a good "match" for their body type and sleeping positions or because they have a narrower comfort or support range that seems to work well for them then zoning may be helpful because the firmer zones under the heavier parts of your body can allow you to use softer comfort layers with better pressure relief with less risk to alignment. There is more about the pros and cons of zoning in post #11 here and the additional links it includes.

Great - thanks!

So it appears that zoning may help special circumstances, but for the vast majority it's unnecessary in their search for the ideal PPP?

Hi idlewild,

This will really depend on whether you are talking about the "needs" part of PPP (Posture and alignment and Pressure relief) or the "preferences" part of PPP.

While many people may not "need" zoning and would sleep well on a suitable mattress without it ... some of these people may still find they "prefer" it depending on the specifics of the mattress and the zoning "as a whole".
