Great thread on pillows.

I have been using a buckwheat hull pillow for over 20 years and love it. I have some cervical spine issues that I go to the chiropractor for. I like that I can shape the pillow to any size I need for neck/head support no matter what position I am in. I know this type of pillow is not for everyone. I bought my wife one and she was not crazy about it.

I had tried some of the foam neck support/chiropractic pillows on the market before I purchased the buckwheat one, and was very unhappy with them, they also were not cheap. They were either very uncomfortable or flattened out after a few months of use.
My wife also tried a wool-filled pillow at one point, but that flattened out after about a year.

I had a good laugh when I read about ZhivagosGirl’s 50 year old pillows. We also have 2 feather/down pillows that must be at least 50 years old that I cannot let go of. I think I used them as a child and inherited them from my parents. They are as flat as a pancake, but I don’t actually use mine as a pillow, but more as a neck/ chest warmer when I am sleeping on my back, and as a side/chest support when sleeping on my side, stomach or somewhere in between. I can’t even imagine what they look like inside.

The reason I searched for the pillow thread, is because my wife is having some neck issues since we got our new latex mattress. Up until now, she has been using a feather pillow for the past few years and has been very happy with it. Now she is searching for a new type of pillow.

A promise I made to myself years ago...IF I find a "perfect" pillow I will buy the store out. I had that pillow a few years ago and kept saying - "I'm going next weekend to buy the rest of them off the shelf". I never did, and subsequently never found the pillow again since it was discontinued. It was a foam pillow at WalMart for $30-40. The next one I find that hit's the sweet spot will be hoarded!

Hi Overcomer,

The next one I find that hit's the sweet spot will be hoarded!

I completely understand the sentiment :)

There are a couple of pillows that I've been trying lately. The first one is a zoned talalay latex pillow from Malouf

Because I'm a side sleeper ... I got the thicker one but also the plush version because I like sinking into my pillow. While I don't find it "bouncy" so much ... like all latex it kind of "assists" or "encourages" free movement (and I can understand how some people wouldn't like this).

I just wanted to pass along additional thanks on this pillow reference. While doing my mattress shopping at Original Mattress Factory, I noticed that the most comfortable pillow they had was the higher loft latex pillow from Rejuvinite. While the OMF pricing on that pillow was quite good, I ended up getting the high loft zoned pillow (but the firm, not plush model) from Malouf via Amazon. I've now slept on it three nights and like it quite a bit. There is a small odor, but it is decreasing every night. While it -is- a little bouncy, I find that when laying my head on the pillow, which is on the mattress, it turns into a nice smooth support platform -- it does not feel too bouncy at that point.

Buckwheat pillow should be the best. But it seems to demand such a high premium if you want even a half decent sized one. Too much for something made out of a waste product.

Anyway, I settled on a pair filled with inch cubed memory foam, giving you all the flexibility to set whatever shape and size you want. They once throw them at people in Ikea for $4.99

it seems waterbase pillows got overlooked here ...

i wish there was more choice with the top layer though - because for now it seems its either dacron or down.

also i wish they made them waveless like modern waterbeds - although i don't think waves would be nearly as much of a problem in a pillow as with a waterbed i still see no reason not to use a technology that already exists.

basically it's a shame more companies aren't trying to develop this idea ...

so i gave up trying to find a pillow for myself, but i already had the knowledge and mother's day was coming up and my grandma has been telling me that she read that high pillows are good for the brain and she is keeping a towel under her pillow to make it taller so i figure - i'll get my grandma a taller pillow for mother's day, i go on Amazon and then i accidentally see this:

www.amazon.com/Customizable-Wool-wrapped...-8&keywords=shredded

damn ! that's just about exactly what i was looking for - FOR MYSELF !

not only is organic cotton over wool over latex precisely the combination i wanted but most importantly - this pillow is adjustable ! that is you can take out extra latex to customize the height to exactly how high you want your head ! i have been looking for a pillow where you can remove some of the latex without any luck and then i just stumble on this accidentally !

but damn it costs 5 times as much as Dreamfoam pillow but on the other hand it IS adjustable and if you're going to go for adjustable pillow i would much rather go for Latex than buckwheat !

?

damn king size is $237 with shipping - that's more than all Tempurpedic pillows except the Grand. i was really planning to spend more like $60 on a pillow ...

hm this one is also a definite maybe:

www.amazon.com/Natural-Fluffed-Shredded-...ustable+latex+pillow

doesn't have the wool, but that should make it softer. has adjustable latex fill and removable / washable stretch knit organic cotton cover.

and is $100 less !

I like most of you live in a normal US city with a big city within an hour. In this case Charlotte, NC. I just purchased a latex mattress, but was not in love with the latex pillows they were selling. Before I buy on Amazon or some other website, are there any chain stores that carry any pillows worth a darn where you can actually try them out? I don't care about cost, just comfort and I don't want to buy a pillow from Amazon (untested) and have to send it back.

Any help would be appreciated.
