The Alexander Hybrid Signature Select Mattress Has Arrived! 19 Mar 2016 09:12 #22

Another update from me. I received a wool pad from Nest and put it on the mattress under the mattress protector. It actually made it hotter and I did not notice any change in firmness. So my plan now is to continue without the pad and see how the break in goes. If it is still too firm after a reasonable break in period I may seek a softer replacement.

p.s. Flood protection wait of 60 sec is kind of annoying when I just want to make a quick correction. Just saying... :)

60 second flood protection is a small price to pay to help protect the forum from spammers :)

You're only the second one to mention it in over 5 years that the forum has existed.

The Alexander Hybrid Signature Select Mattress Has Arrived! 30 Mar 2016 10:26 #24

Noticed that Nest Bedding appears to have made changes to the construction of this Hybrid bed. Per there website, the new specs are:
1.5" Soft Quilted Cover
2" 3.5 lb Copper Infused Memory Foam
2" of our SmartFlow Foam (1.8 lb porous, punched polyfoam)
5 zone pocketed coil unit with Edge Support.

Thanks chadb97, what were the specs before, do you know?

EDIT: Never mind, I found the old specs on another website:

1.5" quilted top layer
3" copper infused memory foam (4lb density according to Phoenix's original conversation with Joe)
3" gel memory foam
6" pocketed coils

Phoenix, any thoughts on how this affects the quality of the mattress? My first thought is that it's probably better to have a more firm surface between the coils and the comfort layer for durability, but I don't know that for a fact. Would love to hear any further input on this since I had basically decided on this mattress and am now unsure.

All the layers and components in a mattress (including all the foam layers, the cover and quilting, and the specifics of the pocket coil) will affect the feel and performance of all the other layers and components both above and below it and the mattress "as a whole". In terms of "comfort" firmness and PPP the only way to know whether the new design would be better or worse for any specific person would be based on their own personal experience. For some people it may be a better "fit" and for others it may be worse depending on their body type, sleeping style, and their own specific needs and preferences.

They have a great return policy that lets you test the mattress in your bedroom instead of a showroom to find out whether it's a good "match" in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP with little risk outside of the time you spend sleeping on it or returning it should that be necessary.

While I can't speak to how a mattress will feel for someone else ... in terms of the quality and durability of the materials ... the 3.5 lb memory foam would be generally be a slightly lower quality/density and less durable material than 4 lb memory foam and would be "on the edge" or slightly less than the minimum foam density guidelines I would normally suggest so I would be cautious for anyone that is in a higher than average weight range or BMI.

The new innerspring is zoned which would affect the feel and performance of the mattress and may make it more suitable for a higher percentage of people but there is also a reduction in the type and amount of specialty foam materials in the comfort layers above the spring as well so the mattress would have less of a memory foam "feel" with the thinner layer of memory foam and the more resilient "feel" of the polyfoam underneath it.

Thanks for the feedback, Phoenix! Actually, it appears that the Alexander Hybrid isn't the only Nest Bed that has had some material/component changes. I just checked the Love Bed and it doesn't appear to feature latex any longer. I'm pretty disappointed since now I feel like Nest is not necessarily the way I want to go anymore. It might be back to the drawing board for me.

Yes ... they've changed the designs of all of the Alexander series and the Love Bed.

As the owner of a hybrid that I am in the process of returning, I find myself somewhat surprised that they have already changed the design on what was their newest mattress. When I visited their store, no mention was made of the redesign of any of their mattresses.

I am also in the process of returning mine and honestly the new specs seem more like a website correction as based on the feel of the mattress it much more closely resembles the new specs. I even measured the height of the coils since you can feel them from the side and I got 8" not 6" like the original specs would indicate. This also likely explains why the mattress feels more like a traditional mattress and less like the TempurFlex line I was hoping for. I wonder if there was some sort of miscommunication between them and their supplier on the final specs.

Good to see they are adding better edge support to the regular Alexander line though as that was likely a major factor pushing people to the hybrid in the first place.
