Here is a question I have yet to find an answer for....
Why do most people spend more money on their car and clothing than their mattress? We spend an average of 8 hours a day in bed yet many people shop for the cheapest mattress possible. They will spend thousands on a new car, and designer clothes, but sleep on a mattress that is uncomfortable, and causes them back pain.

Could it be because nobody can see their mattress, while they can parade their new car and clothes? Are we that self centered that we place more importance on our appearance than our comfort and well needed rest?

The average cost of a quality mattress is around 1500$, and will give you 15 years of comfort and support. That's only 100$ a year, or .27 cents a day! Some will argue that there on a budget, this maybe true, however these same people will take out a 6 year loan for a new car... This is one of those questions I have yet to find a answer for....

Hi MFC Memory Foam Comfort,

I don't have any specific answers for you because each person may have very different reasons for their purchase choices but I would guess that as important as a mattress (and good sleep) may be ... most people just don't place as much importance on a good mattress as they do on their clothes or on a car. I would also think that it has less to do with "parading" a new car or clothes or with "self importance" as it does with each person's priorities.

I also think over a 10 year period that even reasonable costs for clothing or for a car would be significantly more than a reasonable cost for a good mattress and I don't think that anyone even needs to spend as much for a good mattress as they do for their wardrobe or for a car. I just can't imagine anyone spending only $1500 on a new car or for clothing costs over the course of 10 years.

Hi Phoenix,

I also think over a 10 year period that even reasonable costs for clothing or for a car would be significantly more than a reasonable cost for a good mattress and I don't think that anyone even needs to spend as much for a good mattress as they do for their wardrobe or for a car. I just can't imagine anyone spending only $1500 on a new car or for clothing costs over the course of 10 years.

I agree, they will spend a lot more on clothing and a vehicle that's my point! I receive many emails per week of people shopping for the cheapest mattress possible. I'm sure most of these people have cars, and spend more than 1500$ over a 10 year period on clothes, yet a 1500$ mattress is too much money....

Still looking for an answer to make sense of this....

cheers

I think the more correct questions is why people place more importance on things like clothes or cars or flat screen televisions, when a mattress has a much greater impact upon their health and restoration.

Spink & Edgar recently posed the same question on their web site and listed reasons like: all mattresses look the same; I don't see it so I don't know it's there; and I can't show it off like I can my car.

I would also add that mattresses are seen as a necessary evil and no one likes to go shop for one, as the retail environment is by and large unpleasant. Additionally, the industry (manufacturers and retailers) have done a very poor job of associating health, restoration and wellness to having a good mattress. It's driven more by marketing and "50% Off" sales on President's Day and creating 12 different meaningless names for the same foam with veiled claims of doing everything from growing hair to increasing your IQ. Plus, you have manufacturers allowing these products to be sold at hardware stores, grocery stores and even gas stations. And being sold by people uneducated about foams, sleep, restoration or sleep ergonomics. Is it any wonder people place so little value on their mattress when it’s presented to them like this?

While we can all bemoan this state of affairs, it does provide the opportunity for those of us who are truly educated and concerned about health and restoration to shine like a diamond in a pile of shinola and make a difference in their own little corner of the world.

Imagine telling your coworkers, "I slept well last night, with perfect spinal alignment, and I feel totally renewed".

People who are fortunate enough to encounter a diligent and conscientious mattress representative need to share how it changed their lives.

We do! Sometimes we get weird looks, but most are very thankful for the referral that led them to good sleep and better health.
