Brooklyn Bedding Firm Mattress 27 Nov 2016 11:33 #1

Hi there! Thank you for creating this site. I need an opinion. I bought a Leesa mattress a month ago. Great mattress, the cooling effect is fantastic. I didn't have to wrap my lower back with paper towel as usual. But, I needed a firmer one and bought a Brooklyn Bedding mattress a week ago. (I am keeping both until deciding which one is the right one) The firmness of the BB one is ideal, I like the feeling of being on the mattress, instead of in the mattress. But, everything changed last night, when my girlfriend came over, and we slept together for the first time on the Brooklyn Bedding one. The problem was: I was feeling like falling off the bed! She is only 108 pounds. Why is that happening? Any opinion greatly appreciated.

Hi alexbrklyn,

Welcome to the Mattress Forum! :)

What size mattress do you have?

The firmness of the BB one is ideal, I like the feeling of being on the mattress, instead of in the mattress

The Leesa mattress uses Avena polyfoam and memory foam in the upper layers, which would certainly have a bit more of an “in” than an “on” surface comfort feel. The BME uses two 2” layers of latex in the upper layers, which will certainly have a bit more of a buoyant feel.

But, everything changed last night, when my girlfriend came over, and we slept together for the first time on the Brooklyn Bedding one. The problem was: I was feeling like falling off the bed

I’m not sure why you would feel as if you were falling off of the bed (I’m guessing you mean rolling toward the outside of the mattress) with an extra person in the product, unless you were both sleeping next to each other upon the edge of the mattress (neither of these products use a racetrack edge system). I’m curious what you are using for a foundation under your mattress and if that may be contributing to this unique feeling. Have you tried the Leesa mattress on the same foundation with both of you in the same position to see if you have a similar result?

She is only 108 pounds.

What’s your weight as well?

With a little more information hopefully we can come up an explanation of this for you. B)

Thank you Phoenix for your prompt response! I have a queen size mattress. Yes, rolling toward the outside of the mattress with an extra person in the product is what I meant. Thanx for composing the right explanation! And that was surprising indeed, I weight around 170 pounds. We tried the Leesa mattress on the same foundation - it's a platform bed "Charleston" Queen Plus size (meaning the gap between slats smaller, to accommodate the foam types of mattresses). I did not have a "rolling toward the outside" effect when sleeping on Leesa. I did enjoy the Leesa, especially the cooling sensation. The only disadvantage was a slight sinking in.

Hi alexbrklyn,

Please describe the positioning of each person when you notice this. There is more resilience in the upper form layers of the BME, so the point elasticity won’t be quite as great as a mattress using foams like the Avena polyfoam and memory foam in the upper comfort layers. Have you tried the mattress on the floor to see if it reproduces the exact sensation? The sensation of leaning, especially when comparing to a product that allows more sinking in, isn’t always an actual demonstrable fact, but sometimes the reference of sensations between two different products. I’d be interested to learn if there is a difference if the mattress is on the floor, and exactly how you are able to reproduce the sensation (each person’s position on the mattress), and if you feel the same sensations with the positions reversed on the other side of the mattress. A firmer product using more resilient foams can sometime shave a bit more “pull” from one person to another when next to each other on a mattress as well. Of course, these are all theoreticals and what really matters is what you feel.

I’ll be interested to learn of your replies.

I have noticed the sensation when I was laying on my half of the bed, not just being close to the edge. You have asked a good question : “Have you tried the mattress on the floor to see if it reproduces the exact sensation?”. When we used Leesa for the first time we slept together the Leesa was on the floor, before the new platform bed had arrived. Afterward, I was sleeping on Leesa by myself, on the platform bed, and the only thing that bothered me, was the lack of firmness on Leesa. That’s why I decided to find a new one, and I found the BME. I will put back Leesa tonight to see if the rolling toward outside is happening, too, when we sleep together on Leesa on the platform bed.

Hi alexbrklyn,

I’ll be interested in learning about the results of your experiment. Ideally, it would be nice if you had enough space to try out the BME on the floor. If you’re sleeping on your half of the mattress, and someone enters the mattress on their half of the mattress, it doesn’t follow from a standpoint of physics or foam dynamics that you would be forced to the outside of the product, unless there was something else causing that sensation. If anything it would be the opposite.

Have fun with your mattress rotation plan!

Thank you for your interest and perfect observations. This will sound strange, maybe dumb or embarrassing...but, here we go. When I assembled a new Charleston platform bed Queen Plus, and after finishing it with attaching the 5th leg, located under the mid point of the bed, I noticed that that leg was a bit higher - slightly buy noticeable - than the rest of the legs. I had a feeling it will, after some time, and after the mattress and body weight do their job, level with the rest of the legs. After posting my confusion on your site (your site is an amazing creation, like a Harvard for mattresses) it popped in my mind that that sensation of rolling toward the outside of the bed might have something to do with the fifth leg. Last night I dissembled the fifth leg. We slept good... but on Leesa, not on the BME! Because yesterday morning, after hearing that my girlfriend didn't feel good sleeping on the firm mattress - and I had that rolling sensation - I switched to Leesa.. Tonight, I have put back the BME. My girlfriend is not here. Now I have to wait for my girlfriend to come back and find; if the rolling effect is still noticeable; and if not, and that's a different story, will my girlfriend be able to adjust to firm BME mattress. If the BME wins. Last night's good night sleep on Leesa made me realized that Leesa is back to game. (I think I like Leesa better. It seems to be less hot than firmer BME. Right now, while writing this I am laying on the BME and noticing the firmness, the pressure onto my lower back, as well as the the warm sensation). Will find the answer in next few days. I have to, I need to remove the other mattress out of the bedroom :). It's a great thing to be able to try both of them. Will the rolling sensation still be noticeable after the removal of the 5th leg? That's the first thing I need to find out. It's good to have you near by.

Hi alexbrklyn,

Bingo – I think you’ve found your issue. I’ve seen this before and as little as .25” can cause an issue in how a product feels. This makes perfect sense with the sensations you were describing.

You may wish to shorten the center leg a bit to allow for the addition of an adjustable glide with a t-nut to accommodate for different heights on different surfaces (carpet, tile, area rugs) in the future.

Good luck with your future testing.
