Canadian Shoppers: US Mattresses Will Now Cost You More!
As of July 1 2018, Mattresses and Pillows coming from the USA will be hit with a 10% tariff from the federal government when entering Canada.
It looks like it will be charged 10% on the cost of the item when it hits the border. Mattresses that are made in the USA still fall under NAFTA and are exempt from duties until now. As a Canadian you will still be charged broker fees and your province's taxes by the carrier to claim your package.
In the end we all end up paying for trade wars more here
All the best
The tariff on 1000$ should be 100$.
Other cost to consider if buying a mattress from the USA:
Convert 1000$ USD into Canadian = 1314$ (as of 4/7/2018)
Brokers Fees = from 75$ to 125$ depending on carrier
In order to fall under NAFTA and be exempt from Duties you manufacturer will have to send a certificate of origin along with the mattress, if not you'll have to pay duties.
Finally provincial taxes that are around 15%

Another point to consider:
If ever your mattress needs to be returned to the manufacturer for warranty issue, you will have to deal with paper work and brokers fees going in and out of the USA.
All the best!
Just to finish the math (correct this if it's wrong please):
- price 1314.00 CAD (1000.00 USD)
- tariff 131.40 CAD
- broker fees 100.00 CAD (75.00 to 125.00)
- sales tax 197.10 CAD (assuming it's just on the base price)
- duties 0.00 CAD (if no problems there, no idea how much they would be otherwise anyway)
Total: 1742.50 CAD
So...add around 75% to the US price!
Thanks for chiming and adding your break down of mattress costs for Canadian shoppers.
So just to confirm, as I'm considering purchasing a Sleep on Latex mattress and having it shipped to Ontario, Canada...
If they include a certificate of origin showing that it was manufactured in the US, I'm assuming NAFTA should still apply and thus, only HST to pay (no duty or customs). Is this correct?
