Stuck between a Mattress and a Box Spring - Please Help! (not literally)

Hi all, I am new here and am in dire need of help. My wife and I are looking to upgrade our mattress and this will be our first real mattress purchase. We have always had second hand, big box store innerspring mattresses but it's time for that to change. We have a Queen and are only looking for a mattress.

We have a 1 year old that sleeps with us pretty much every night for at least part of the night so we have been leaning toward an all natural, certified mattress. We live in Canada and those options seem limited here from our research, as we are not prepared to spend too much at this time. We almost pulled the trigger on the Kiwi from My Green Mattress and just have it shipped from the US (in fact we did, but cancelled our ordered as we second guessed ourselves). That one came to just over $1600 Canadian after Shipping and duties and we are not sure how comfortable we are spending that right now. We can. But not sure if we should.

We have also started to considered just going a little cheaper for now and getting an Endy or a Douglas. If it was just me and her we likely would, but we do have some concern for VOCs for the little one.

A brief description of us for those who know what works and doesn't.

I am 6'0" 195lbs. I am more of a combo sleeper. Typically switch between side and back, sometimes stomach. I do tend to have some aches and pains and am hopeful that a new mattress will help in this regard. I have a history of a bad right shoulder. I am a very sound sleeper. I also snore a bit apparently.

My wife is about 5'7", about 130lbs. She tends to sleep on her back mostly with minimal side sleeping. She is a very light sleeper and often gets frustrated at me for the slightest movements in bed.

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated and if you have any further questions that may help don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you!

Hey apreynolds1989,

Welcome The Mattress Underground :) ! Thanks for joining us and for your question.

My wife and I are looking to upgrade our mattress and this will be our first real mattress purchase. We have always had second hand, big box store innerspring mattresses but it's time for that to change. We have a Queen and are only looking for a mattress.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey! Hope you find the resources here on the forum useful as you continue your research and decision-making process. You mentioned regarding your past "second hand, big box store innerspring mattresses", that "it's time for that to change" and that you are looking only for a queen mattress. Will you continue using your current queen box spring or just use a base? Are you located near any mattress manufacturers' showrooms where you and your wife could safely try product personally?

We have a 1 year old that sleeps with us pretty much every night for at least part of the night so we have been leaning toward an all natural, certified mattress. We live in Canada and those options seem limited here from our research, as we are not prepared to spend too much at this time.

Your question reminds me of this previous post by Phoenix addressing natural shopping options in Canada,   "Canada Vancouver, Latex mattress options under $2000" , containing this TMU trusted member listing you may find useful for your research, several are much in line with your $1600 CA budget:
Dormio Canadian Manufacturer specializing in organic/natural latex mattresses with options that fit all budget ranges.
CBH Wood Furniture Canadian Manufacturer with an European tri slat system bed deign with natural latex mattresses which is great for proper alignment
Memory Foam Comfort Canadian online retailer with a very good selection of latex mattresses and hybrids that would fit your budget range. They used to have their HC in Delta BC but I am not sure if this is still the case.
Bedmasters US based manufacturer that ships to Canada(free shipping).
Arizona Premium Mattress US based manufacturer that ships to Canada(shipping charges apply).
FloBeds Is a US-based manufacturer that ships worldwide and has options that would fit your budget range
Flexus Comfort US based manufacturer that ships to Canada(free shipping) and is well within your budget range.
Luma Sleep US based retailer that ships to Canada($50 added shipping) with very good options well within your budget range.
My Green Mattress US based manufacturer that ships to Canada.
Nest Bedding US based manufacturer that ships to Canada(free shipping).
Sleep EZ US based manufacturer who ships to Canada, shipping charges may apply
Sleep On Latex US based manufacturer, who ships to Canada).

As it seems you are ready to venture into different type mattress options, you may want to check out Phoenix's "Different Types or Categories of Mattresses" , a comparison of the common types of mattresses available, as well as "Mattress Comfort Layers-Overview" , "Mattress Support Cores- Overview" and "Five Steps to your Perfect Mattress" ; overall, a little bit of a homework assignment that should go along way in helping organize your research.

Appreciate your consideration of My Green Mattress as a choice, they are one of TMU's many Expert Trusted Members and we think highly of their products, quality and service. Thanks for the thorough reply!

We have now been debating whether or not we should just go all in now and get a king, which we want to do eventually anyway. If we do that, we would be getting a platform frame. Would that make a difference to the type of mattress?

If we do keep the Queen, we would be keeping our current box spring.

Good question, apreynolds1989. While your researching the king size options, you'll find recommendations for a proper foundation are based on best-performance recommendations by the manufacturer. A platform frame should be fine as long as it is constructed to support the weight of the components you're using, but asking is always good.

If we do keep the Queen, we would be keeping our current box spring.

If you're keeping the current queen box spring, you should check the new mattress warranty details as some manufacturer warranties are specific in the type foundations that are used, possibly resulting in a voided warranty situation. BTW, the king sounds good; the 1 year old becomes a 2 year old before you know it, at least in our household lol ;). Good luck and looking forward to more updates.

Thanks,
Sensei
