couple with different BMIs....will zoned coils be too much support for BMI @22?

ME: 5'2" 125 pounds (BMI 23) HE: 6'0" 225 pounds (BMI 30.5)
Both primarily side sleepers, 60+ years of age

We were leaning towards a hybrid mattress w/ pocketed coils + dunlop and/or talalay upper layer(s), but upon chatting with reps from different companies which offer this option, some mentioned a single zone coil system was not recommended for his BMI and he would need more support. So I expanded my research to include zoned coils and/or zoned latex, and am now worried that he might get the proper support this way, but that I will suffer from too firm support and my hips and shoulder will not "sink" as they should.

I know we could select a customized (i.e. different ILD latex for him and myself) with high ILD dunlop as the support core, but just want to ask the collective knowledge of this group if my understanding of zoned coils is accurate (i.e. it would be "too firm" for me)? I "could" add an additional soft topper but am hoping there is some hybrid pocketed coil + latex mattress out there that would work for both of us.

Thanks for a great resource! We are so glad to have found this forum before just buying a mattress without intimate knowledge of the components.

Cheers

Hey Juli,

Welcome to The Mattress Underground :) ! Thanks for your question.

Different zoning methods use any combination of comfort layers over any type of support layer depending on the variety of zoning being used and the individual's needs/ circumstances. You can read more about zoning in Phoenix's article "Putting Mattress Layers Together" . Generally speaking, what you are able to "feel" in terms of "not sinking in" involves the comfort layers of the mattress, those responsible for providing pressure relief and other support qualities, you can learn more from Phoenix's "Mattress Comfort Layers" .

Questions for you: have you slept on latex before? What brand/ construction bed do you have now and what features do you like about it? Are you talking with local manufacturer/ retailers and is it possible/ safe to make store visits in your area for testing zoned mattresses? If for any reason you aren't comfortable shopping in your area, please do not put your health at risk; however, do continue to have chats with experienced sources who can help you understand your comfort preferences vs. your husband's support needs, and what options would best serve you both.

Thanks for a great resource! We are so glad to have found this forum before just buying a mattress without intimate knowledge of the components.
