hips hurting and legs falling asleep when sleeping

Hello. I've had a 12" latex mattress for the past year. I have rearranged the layering of the mattress many times to try and achieve the best quality nights sleep.Unfortunately the past few months both my left and right hips are getting very sore when I sleep on my sides, and I've noticed my legs and butt falling asleep during the night. I have four 3" Dunlop layers ranging from soft to xfirm. Mattress size is a Twin XL.

Here is the current ordering top to bottom:
1" wool layer
Dunlop Soft - IDL 18.0, Density 4.0
Dunlop Firm - IDL 26, Density 5.3
Dunlop Firm - IDL 26, Density 5.3
Dunlop XFirm - IDL 38, Density 5.9

Mattress is encased in a Knit Ticking from DIY Natural Bedding. I've tried pulling the wool layer out of the cover and also moved the top layer outside of the cover. Neither seemed to help with the legs/hips/butt falling asleep.

My husband has a Medium Talalay topper on his hybrid side (also Twin XL) which has an IDL of 27, Density 5.0. I'm trying to decide if I should pull the Talalay off of his side and switch it out with one of my Dunlop layers. I don't particularly like to jiggly feeling of the Talalay and found that I do not sleep as well if this is my comfort layer. But maybe it would work to replace one of my Firm layers further down? Or maybe I need to figure out a different comfort layer to replace the Dunlop? Either way I don't think I can sleep on the current config much longer as I am having a lot of sleep interruptions and do not find it very comfortable. All of the layers were purchased from Foam Sweet Foam. I want to love the bed but I currently do not. I'm seriously considering abandoning the 100% latex and buying a spring bed insert and making it into a hybrid. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Best - Roberta

Hey Roberta,

Welcome back to the forum and thanks for your question :) !

Hello. I've had a 12" latex mattress for the past year. I'm sorry to hear of the hip/ leg sleep discomfort you’ve been having, Roberta. Experimenting with rearranging the comfort layers is a good first step for attempting to improve the mattress's feel, it does seem that Dunlop latex may be a little too firm for your comfort preferences.

My husband has a Medium Talalay topper on his hybrid side (also Twin XL) which has an IDL of 27, Density 5.0. I'm trying to decide if I should pull the Talalay off of his side and switch it out with one of my Dunlop layers. You could try swapping his talalay topper in lieu of one of your dunlop layers; you may have to experiment a bit before feeling whether that will provide you with the pressure-relieving feel that you need.

Either way I don't think I can sleep on the current config much longer as I am having a lot of sleep interruptions and do not find it very comfortable. All of the layers were purchased from Foam Sweet Foam. I want to love the bed but I currently do not.

Question for you: have you contacted Foam Sweet Foam directly for help? They are a TMU trusted member and would want to help their customers with comfort layering advice of their product; here is a link to the Contact Us page from their web site. Also, here is a link to their Return & Exchange policies for review; as you mention having the mattress for the past year, that would be outside of their replacement/ return timeline most likely. It would be worth asking their thoughts on how to improve the comfort feel for your needs. Hope this helps and looking forward to hearing how the layer replacement experimenting goes…;)

Thanks,
Sensei
