Looking for a new mattress- Chemically sensitive safe 24 Aug 2020 13:46 #1

Long story short, I need a new mattress. I bought a Happsy(owned by Naturepedic) and it smelled like playdoh/rubber to the point of two non sensitive people asking what in the world that smell was. So I am eliminating latex from my options. Quite honestly, finances are very bad but I do need a tolerable bed to sleep on. I have narrowed it down to a few.

First, the Pure Echo from Mygreenmattress. Seems to be the best deal, however, I hear it is extremely firm and many complain about that.

Second is the Chorus by Naturepedic. Pretty much the same thing as the Happsy to my knowledge minus the latex.

Third is the Lifelink Traditional. Extremely expensive($2600+) but gets very good reviews by chemically sensitive people.

I am tall and thin and light. 6 foot, 135 lbs. I would say I am not crazy about super firm mattresses but I don't know much about them. I often sleep on my side, even if I don't intend to, I wake up on my side. This is my only concern with the Pure Echo.

Given my financial situation, and sensitivities, having no return policy on the Chorus or Lifelink is concerning. I can leave it out in the sun for a few days to promote any natural off gassing, but if it's got any sort of 'pungent' odor(I would consider the Happsy to be a pungent but not chemically odor, it smelled like rubber), it won't work for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi itsgoofy. The pure echo is a great option for those looking for a foam / latex free mattress. The absence of foam / latex does make this mattress to be a firmer than average mattress with a more flat and traditional feel. I do however want to say that I think the odor may have been an anomaly with the Happsy brand mattress. I have always found the organic latex we use at MyGreenMattress to be extremely mild in odor. Given your thin build and side sleeping, I'd rather you try our Natural Escape mattress which does have organic latex. It will contour better to your body. We also have a free return or exchange policy within 120 nights. A new organic mattress will have some odor that dissipates quickly given the organic fibers,. but I feel fairly confident you will find this organic latex better if you go that route.
My Green Mattress for your blissful sleep

I respectfully disagree with My Green Mattress. Latex does have an odor and you won't be happy with it. I used to have an latex bed and there was an odor. This time around I wanted no latex so bought:
Joybed - one had no odor another had a weird odor (neither had latex) so I think the odor was from their unidentified (as in they didn't print anything on their tags) ingredients but zoning was comfortable
My Green Mattress Natural Escape: Too hard with the zoning so added their latex topper. Definitely had a latex odor.
Naturepedic pillow top latex free EOS - No odor. Went through 4 of them getting our two and none had any odor.

The sales person at Naturepedic represented the Chorus as also very hard. We also bought a My Green Mattress Echo for my mom and she loves it. No odor. She says it is very comfortable.

For your situation, and the price difference, I would go with the My Green Mattress Echo and then if it isn't soft enough add comfort layers on top.

Thank you! Great info. I agree, the mygreenmattress Pure Echo for the money seems like a no brainer. Any suggestions for odorless toppers I could consider to put on top of it if its too stiff?

The naturepedic looks spectacular, it's just out of my budget currently. Maybe one day.

I wish I knew a good topper. If I did I would have gone that direction myself and not spent close to $6K on two twinXL mattresses.

I would look for something in organic cotton or wool. But you will find they are pricey. Or if you have a comforter that your not sensitive to you could try folding that up and see if it adds softness. I always found polyester fill type toppers to add softness but it depends on what you are sensitive to if that would work. I've only used them in hotels so haven't tried them long term.

In my research I read that the coils almost never wear out. It is the comfort layers on top of the coils that go bad, specifically the foam. So if you get the My Green Mattress Pure Echo then you have a great, lasting mattress that you can put different materials on to provide the comfort layer. Trust me, it is much easier to return or swap out comfort layers than to be swapping the mattress out if it doesn't work out.

I suggest putting the new mattress into a bed bug encasement to protect it from skin cells settling in over time. Then you should have something long lasting and you won't have to go through finding another mattress any time soon. We got this one and found it had no odor. We did wash it per instructions and line dry.

Thanks again for the reply. I am still undecided. Ordered samples from all of the major brands I am considering. I got the Naturepedic samples in today. The latex is a no-go, the cotton is perfect and I have zero issue with it, and the wool I also had a slight reaction to. The Pure Echo with a topper would be great, but I am struggling to find a cotton topper. Given the free return policy on the Naturepedic and MGM, I will probably end up picking one to try and if I am not satisfied, trying the other. Honestly, if I could get the Pure Echo to be softer I would probably just buy that and be done with it. Waiting on samples from them now to see if I can tolerate them.

I would absolutely be looking at the EOS but the price tag is just too much. The Chorus is the only option, and it sounds like it is quite similar to the Mygreenmattress, which is about half the price.

I was thinking about trying this wool topper but never did. They only offer an exchange, not a refund.

I was just on that site actually! A friend had suggested I check out this mattress www.thefutonshop.com/organic-cotton-futon-mattress-firm/?fbclid=IwAR1WU1V36NS5CafpLi0n2nFgflwV4OBxYTtOCcDJv96V0kjINDapFevaIx4

I presume it's got to be rock hard since it's 100% cotton. But it might be something to consider. I am certain if its 100% cotton I will tolerate it chemically, but I don't want to wreck my back in the process.

If it were me I would buy the Pure Echo and then work with toppers. The Chorus is made very similar and I don't think it will be any softer.

I searched as much as I could for a non-latex, non-zoned mattress and didn't find any other options when we were buying. They may be out there but I couldn't find them.

If you don't mind zoned Parachute is another option that I only saw on this board after we had the Naturepedic so I never tried them.

The Joybed LXP (luxury plush) zoned was ok for me in terms of comfort but the My Green Mattress Natural Escape zoned was much too firm under the hips.

The only problem with the Joybed is that they didn't include the materials list on the tag, they weren't organic like their video said, the web site said they were "natural" and that organic is too expensive. I think they made the video when they were planning to be organic and then changed to natural but did not update the video. And one of the two we got had an odor that did not disappate. So I can't recommend trying them even though they were the only plush/soft mattress I found that was foam free. All the other foam free ones were classified as firm. The tag materials list is required by law so I don't know how they are getting away with not filling them out. The tag indicates they are made (if memory serves me corrently) in a mainstream mattress brand (i.e. chemical filled) factory so you could easily get alot of chemical cross contamination. Also Joybed does not include negative reviews on their web site as they never published mine complaining of a twin size sent when twinXL was ordered and the lack of materials information on the tag. I don't know how many mattress places filter their reviews like that but be wary of reviews on the manufacturers web site.

My Green Mattress and Naturepedic are made in their own factories and not subbed out. All the ones we got from these two vendors were odor free.
