Very interested in MyGreenMattress vs. Avocado feedback vs The Real Bed 28 Sep 2020 09:08 #1

Long time reader and first time poster, I respect this forum. Many valuable insights to learn. 8 years ago we bought a natural Emily mattress from Quality Sleep Shop locally in IL, and after several re-tuning attempts it was set to serve, it work really well for first 5 years but quickly started to decline after that it is time to replace it, severe back pains when we sleep on it and none when we sleep on newer mattresses. If I am not mistaken MyGreenMattress is an internet sister company of Quality Sleep Shop. I have contacted MyGreenMattress anticipating the same quality responses that I used to get from Tim the Bedhead and got polite answers I do not think it was Tim himself but nevertheless they responded. Unfortunately, answers did not help with the decision. Has anyone compared GreenMattress to Avocado and/or The Real Bed from Charles P Rogers? Found several posts here that speak to both MyGreenMattress and Avocado being firm "hard". Similar notes in ConsumerReports actual people reviews. The Real Bed has almost no feedback that I can find. Thank you in advance.

Hey smoky_mountains,

Welcome to the Mattress Underground :) ! Thanks for your question.

Thanks for your kind words on the forum; they are much appreciated. Sorry to hear that you're experiencing back pain issues on your Emily mattress. When you mention that you have "severe back pains when we sleep on it and none when we sleep on newer mattresses", does that mean you have already replaced it with something else?

If I am not mistaken MyGreenMattress is an internet sister company of Quality Sleep Shop. I have contacted MyGreenMattress anticipating the same quality responses that I used to get from Tim the Bedhead and got polite answers I do not think it was Tim himself but nevertheless they responded. Unfortunately, answers did not help with the decision.

Yes, Tim Masters founded the My Green Mattress Family of natural sleep products, which also shares the showroom location of his Quality Sleep Shop in IL.

If you can provide a few more details regarding your sleep preferences, weight, height, etc., as well as a more specific question, that would help us guide you through your research. I highly recommend a review of several Phoenix articles as thought starters: "Determining Your Personal Statistics" , for understanding the role your unique needs plays in materials/ components selection; "Determining Mattress Durability" , for using those details to better choose the type materials/ construction for your mattress; and lastly, "Finding a Great Mattress Outlet" , a review of working with mattress manufacturers, as well as a Q and A checklist for making phone calls and showroom visits. And to your point, using the TMU Forum Search of keywords, you should find a good deal of consumer conversations on these brands but not necessarily the mattresses you seek opinions on. As a "long time reader" of the TMU forum, you are likely familiar with our policy of not commenting on manufacturers' products who are not vetted members of the Mattress Underground, nor does the TMU offer/ endorse product reviews.

Looking forward to learning more… ,) .

Thanks,
Sensei

Thank you for your answers, very helpful. I just finished reading the articles from the TMU. I have better understanding but also a bit more choices to consider. E.g. I was not even considering all-latex mattresses but so many pointers to them for side-sleepers.
She
125 lbs 5.6’
Side and back sleeper
He
200 lbs 6’
Side and back sleeper

Additional thoughts:
- We only experienced innerspring, hybrid, all foam mattresses
- We need green mattresses as we sleep hot and like the sensation of woolen layers on top.

Thank you for your insights, especially on all-latex for side-sleepers.

Hey smoky_mountains,

Thanks for your reply :) .

Thank you for your answers, very helpful. I just finished reading the articles from the TMU. I have better understanding but also a bit more choices to consider. E.g. I was not even considering all-latex mattresses but so many pointers to them for side-sleepers.
She: 125 lbs 5.6’, Side and back sleeper

Thank you for your insights, especially on all-latex for side-sleepers.

One of latex's most valuable traits is its durability, both as a comfort layer and a support layer. Latex keeps its desirable qualities for longer than other foams and is not nearly as prone to body impressions and premature breakdown. Durability is especially important in the comfort layers of a mattress, which are subjected to greater stresses than other deeper layers. As a comfort layer(s), one or more latex layers in different thicknesses/ ILDs may be offered in a zippered cover, giving the consumer the ability to "customize" comfort, as well as periodically update with new layers over time, if needed.

As a support core, latex also performs well and often lasts 20+ years before replacement is needed. You can learn more about the versatility of latex in comfort layers, or as a support core in Phoenix's articles, "Mattress Comfort Layers- Latex" and "Mattress Support Cores- Latex" . Many of the TMU trusted member manufacturers specialize in helping consumers with customizing components of their mattress offerings; their many years of product design and component construction are based on their deep understanding of both consumer preferences and feedback.

Additional thoughts:
- We only experienced innerspring, hybrid, all foam mattresses
- We need green mattresses as we sleep hot and like the sensation of woolen layers on top.

From the TMU trusted member directory , you will find by category a listing of the manufacturers and their offerings. When you say you "like the sensation of woolen layers on top", does that mean a preference for an all-natural mattress cover or wool topper as a comfort layer?

Thanks,
Sensei
