5'4 Female 170 lbs. Side sleeper looking for recommendations. Help! 15 Jan 2021 15:54 #1

Hello Mattress Experts,

I'm a 5'4 woman, 170 lb side sleeper looking for a new mattress. I used to own a Beautyrest Plush Pillow top that I had only a couple of year. I found that extremely comfortable but can't say past those couple of years how they held up. Recently I've been sleeping on a all foam mattress from a box that I hate. I wake up sore everyday and hate that it has no side support. I tend to like more plush mattress. Any recommendations?

I recently went to a mattress store and enjoyed trying out a Beautyrest Silver Plush however I've read here that the quality of those isn't great.

Any recommendations would be awesome. Thank you!

Hey BrookeR,

Welcome to the TMU Forum :) ! Thanks for your question.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping journey :) ! Hope that you find the many articles and guidelines from Phoenix's research to be helpful for answering your mattress research questions and we'll do our best to help as well.

I'm sorry to hear that your current all foam mattress is causing you daily soreness, Brooke. What brand mattress are you using and what type foam is it made of? What size is it? As a slightly higher BMI side sleeper, your curvier body profile brings more "gaps" to fill in to spread your weight over the mattress meaning you will need a softer and thicker comfort layer for optimal pressure point relief. A proper firmness

support core
is important too for maintaining correct spinal alignment.

I recently went to a mattress store and enjoyed trying out a Beautyrest Silver Plush however I've read here that the quality of those isn't great. Any recommendations would be awesome. Thank you!

Good job on your site visits and mattress testing :) ! While extra caution is needed during these concerning pandemic times, actually experiencing different mattress's materials, constructions and "feel" are the one sure way to understand how you would interact with a mattress. Do keep in mind that floor models have logged in some use and will feel a bit different than a newly manufactured mattress.

From the Beautyrest Site, the Silver/ Plush details are:

Comfort Type: Plush
Mattress Height: 12"
Cooling: DualCool™ Technology
Comfort Layers: Plush Comfort Foam, Gel Memory Foam Lumbar Support, AirFeel® Foam
Support System: 900 Series Beautyrest® Pocketed Coil® Technology

So, their proprietary ingredients are listed without specific details on the materials themselves, important for evaluating a mattress's durability long-term. With your previous Beautyrest Plush Pillow top mattress, what qualities did you like, aside from its plush feel and firmer edge support? Do you prefer traditional innerspring construction or are you open to other mattress constructions ? What size mattress are you planning to buy and what is your budget? Whatever you choose, make sure that you always find out the information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the durability guidelines here and make sure there are no lower quality materials/ "weak links" that would be cause for concern before making a purchase.

Hopefully, some of these "thought starters" will provide more insights for your research, Brenda. Looking forward to learning more of what your next steps will be and good luck ;) .

Thanks,
Sensei
