I’m looking for a wood king platform bed for a 12” latex mattress. The metal wire base recommended by manufacturer caused mattress to sag. I’ve read the recommendations, looking for best options Considering the Thuma, Avocado Green, and Nomad but would like suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Hey caalie,

Welcome back to the forum :) ! Good to see you again and thanks for your question.

There are a wide variety of wood platform beds and manufacturers will have specific recommendations on which would best serve their mattresses as well as which would void a product warranty. A 12" all latex bed is quite heavy, depending on its size, so its weight plus the combined weight of the users should be a consideration for how much the platform will support correctly. The type slats as well as slat spacing must be noted too; generally speaking, the slat spacing should be no greater than 3" apart and in some cases are recommended to be even closer. Sprung slats have some flexibility to them and "give" with the users' weight, creating a softer feel to the mattress.A platform bed using a solid surface or bunkie boards makes a nice choice for sleepers preferring a firmer feeling mattress. For queen and king size mattresses, it is preferable to have a center rail with 2-3 supporting legs if possible.

What brand mattress is your 12" king latex? How long were you using it with the recommended metal wire base? A quick review of its warranty details will specify what type platform is appropriate to use, so be sure and check that before making your selection. Platform beds are discussed quite a bit on the forum, you may try a site search using "wooden platform bed" and see what that yields. Also, this recent post about Thuma and several other platform beds comes to mind. Hope this helps to get you started and perhaps other consumers will chime in with their thoughts… ;) .

I purchased this bed from Foam Sweet Foam along with Bedder Bed wire base they recommended at the time, I believe it was 2014. When I first noticed depression at shoulder area, we flipped the top layers end to end which helped for a time. This is the current information on their website:

Most foundations or bases work well with our mattresses. If you have a Platform Bed or Captain's Bed, you can place it directly on the slats or plywood. If you need an extra 6-10 inches to achieve the desired height, you can use your current box spring or foundation as long as it doesn't sag.

I’d go with a simple foundation with legs if our dog didn’t like to rub against the bed-need something we can wipe down and because she sheds like crazy, vacuum under so some leg height makes that easier. Hoping your members have some ideas and thanks so much for the information, I’ll check out your links.

Thanks for your mattress purchase from trusted member Foam Sweet Foam ! We regard them highly in terms of design expertise, product quality, and customer satisfaction post-sale. Understood about the "canine considerations" and good to know that your are factoring those into your research, caalie ;) . From Foam Sweet Foam's site, it seems that your king Urban Green mattress/ all latex weighs around 200 lbs., so as long as the foundation/ bed base under consideration meets the combined weight requirements of your mattress and users (don't forget to add your fur baby's weight), as well as meets the warranty criteria, you should be good to go. You have another post needing response on the Thuma thread, so I'll see you there shortly.

Thanks,
Sensei
