Does moving a talalay topper into the mattress case make it firmer? 15 Jun 2021 07:12 #1

At the beginning of my mattress journey, I was sleeping on a very firm conventional innerspring mattress with a 3" soft talalay topper. When I went and tried out mattresses, my husband and I both loved a version of the Savvy Rest mattress that 3" firm dunlop on the bottom stacked with 3" medium dunlop and soft dunlop with a seperate soft talalay topper. While the mattress felt great, I wanted to get away from having the separate topper because I find it moves around a lot and we had to adjust it every morning. So instead of ordering the Savvy Rest mattress, I ordered the same 3 layers of dunlop and a 12" cover bamboo cover from Arizona Premium Mattress with the plan to add my existing 3" soft talalay topper into the cover.

My new mattress components arrived a few days ago just as ordered, and I assembled them as planned. I was very surprised to discover that my talalay topper felt WAY firmer inside the mattress case than it had on top of my old bed. The only thing I can guess is that the additional tension from the mattress cover is compressing the talalay and making it firmer? I'm wondering if I can just pull the talalay topper out, although that might make the rest of the mattress softer because the cover will be too big? I'm hoping for a quick solution, because the bed is now way too firm for my husband and he's not sleeping well.

Does moving a talalay topper into the mattress case make it firmer? 15 Jun 2021 19:15 #2

Hi AnnM.

The short answer is yes, a mattress encasement can be firm/tight (especially when brand new) and cause some extra firmness to a mattress.

Taking the topper out of the encasement shouldn't case the other components to feel much softer - the further away the layer is from your body, the less likely you're going to notice minor changes in the firmness.

I would say definitely troubleshoot by removing the talalay topper. If this works, then you know the case was the culprit and you could perhaps talk to Arizona Premium about options that won't change the feel of the topper too much (should you wish to keep all the layers in the same encasement as previously mentioned).

Does moving a talalay topper into the mattress case make it firmer? 16 Jun 2021 11:18 #3

Thank you, Nikki! Last night we took the toper out of the mattress cover and just set it on top of it. I have a allergen dust cover on my mattress and I stuffed both the topper and now 9" mattress in there. (Previously I'd had a 12" mattress in the dust cover and the topper in its own dust cover.) The mattress felt so much better! And the topper didn't move, either. It's still a little firmer, but we'll see if things break in a little bit before making any more changes.
