Adjustable bed frame - mattress height limit 11 Sep 2021 10:29 #1

I read on one of TMU trusted partners site that mattresses for adjustable bed frames should be limited to a height of 12 inches. I am shopping for latex hybrid mattress with pocket coils and edge support. Can anyone confirm if there is a mattress height limit for the adjustable bed frames? Thank you.

Hi hockeychica.

Welcome to our Mattress Forum. :)

Without knowing the exact source where you read that, it's hard for me to confirm for sure. It's possible they were saying for their bases and mattresses, that 12" is their max recommendation. From what I understand, mattresses up to 15" can be successfully used on an adjustable base.

Really, you will want to confirm what the adjustable bed frame manufacturer recommends for that particular frame. As convenient as it would be, they do vary with regards to the amount of weight they can hold, etc. so I would defer to the manufacturer's recommendations in this case.

Are you looking at any model(s) in particular?

Thank you for your reply. I am torn between a DIY or a mattress with replaceable pillowtop/comfort layer. I definitely want a latex hybrid. I am a side sleeper, 5'5", 160 pounds. Lately, I have been sleeping more side/stomach but may be due to my uncomfortable mattress that is causing upper/mid back pain. I had removed a few of my mattresses that I was choosing because they are zoned and from my research on this forum, it seems that zoned may not be best for side sleepers. I have narrowed it down to the following, which a couple will be more than 12 inches in height:

Sleep EZ 360 Hybrid
Mattress Makers Soledad Medium
LMF DIY: QEE 8 inch pocket coils, Talalay topper (probably 3 inches)
LUMA Sleep: Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress: 14" Two-Layer Latex Hybrid Mattress with 4 or 5" of Natural/Talalay Latex (undecided if I will do soft or medium)

I think they were all compatible with an adjustable bed but was concerned about going over 12 inches.

Hi hockeychica.

Those are all excellent options. Once you have decided which mattress you're going with, it may be worth contacting either the mattress manufacturer or the adjustable base manufacturer to discuss compatibility.

But, unless these mattresses are excessively heavy or tall, you're probably in the clear.
