DIY Build - 3" slab versus three 1" slabs? 04 Oct 2021 08:07 #1

In my DIY build, I know I want 3 inches of Talalay as the comfort layer, with a soft ILD of about 18 (recreating a beloved mattress I can't get anymore).

I currently have two 1" toppers, and could add another 1" to get to a total of three inches.

BUT - will that have a different feel, or breakdown faster, than getting one 3" slab?

And in a way, same question on the core layer. If I do two 3" layers for the core, is that going to support different than one 6" core?

Short answer is yes, it does make a difference because of shear between the layers. Even though the layers stick quite well together, when placed under stress in use the sheets will move more in relation to each other in the 1" config than the 3" config and same with the 3" vs the 6" layers. You will get more durability and it will feel more supportive to have the thicker layers than multiple thin ones. The 1" layers can be used for fine tuning or to adjust the height of layers (say in a split bed config) but in general I wouldn't use less than a 2" layer (3" layers are more the industry standard for custom configs).

That makes sense, thank you. Now I guess I have to reach out and see how big a box something like a queen 6" would come in - to figure out how I would get this home :-)
