DIY Mattress of Another Kind 10 Oct 2021 17:17 #1

So here's the dilemma I'm hoping someone here can help with. My father recently moved in due to a diagnosis of inoperable Glioblastoma and is in need of 24 hour care. As of now he is in bed permanently. The bed we currently have for him is being returned as it did not expand at the edges when removed from the box and it's approaching the 30 day return policy. I have decided on a DIY mattress however in a bit of a different manner than the usual planning and building of such. My goal is a pocketed coil support layer with dunlop above and talalay on top, queen size. Basically I am looking for the least expensive (from an online retailer) queen sized mattress that uses the L & P 8" Combi Zone pocketed coils with a NOT firm (I realize firmness is relative) comfort layer. My father weighs around a 140 lbs now. My eventual plan is to dissect this mattress and cannibalize the pocketed coil system for use in my DIY build. Anyone here know of queen sized mattresses in current production that meets this criteria, even better if the retailer is a TMU trusted member? TIA for all the help!

Hey Yohinan,

Welcome to TMU :) ! Thanks for dropping by and for your question.

I am terribly sorry to hear about your father's inoperable Glioblastoma diagnosis and hope that you're able to find the appropriate bed for his optimal comfort soon. Several of our trusted members do come to mind for the particular construction that you're describing. Arizona Premium Mattress may be your best bet for all 3 elements you seek and would have the easiest solution for harvesting the L & P Combi-Zone pocketed coil unit in the future, as their covers unzip for moving components around. Luma Sleep offers a Hybrid Slumber System , featuring a L & P Combi-Zone pocketed coil unit as its support base; however, it isn't designed to be removed and has a transition layer attached to it. Both Sleep EZ and Latex Mattress Factory have similar models, only with L&P Bolsa coil units rather than Combi-Zone. Hope these links help get you started and good luck with your mattress shopping ;) .

Thank you for the reply. The good news is I placed an online order with APM for a hybrid medium talalay mattress. The bad news is it's a 4 or 5 week wait before they are able to make it due to the current shipping industry shortcomings. Since I have to return the current mattress my father is using my next task is figuring out what to do in the interim for a sleeping solution.
