TOPIC:

Back pain, is it new mattress or pillows? 23 Oct 2021 01:26 #1

Hello!

Thanks to this Reddit and the articles on the mattress underground, me and my girlfriend decided to go with a quality mattress. We are both combination sleepers with a preference to back and side, though I also switch to my stomach ato fall asleep.

We are also overweight and although we are loosing weight, I thought it was best to go for a medium firm mattress to support us during our sleep.

I’m in northern Virginia and decided to go to Vienna Urban Mattress after reading positive experiences about them here and on other sites. If it helps to see the stats I went with the Wolf Creek mattress.

Simple stats are:

Outer Layer: Stretch-knit fiber
Comfort Layer: 2 layers of 2.1 LB memory foam
Support Layer: 6 inches of 1.8 LB 28 ILD foam core
Feel: Medium firm

Now we only have a little over a month maybe month and a half and are still experiencing back pain. Knowing it takes about 60 days to adjust I wonder if having lots of cheap pillows may be messing with us. I have noticed I tend to grab several pillows which may be throwing off my alignment.

Any suggestions? Did we choose the wrong mattress? Are the pillows a potential issue?

Hey vaironl,

Congrats on your new mattress purchase! Thanks for including the Wolf Creek mattress specs, an all-foam mattress using memory foam as comfort material. What type of mattress were you using prior to your new mattress and how old was it? Is this your first memory foam mattress experience? The pillows could be part of the problem. If they are older and worn, they may not be providing the correct loft for keeping your head and neck in proper alignment for your combination sleeping positions. If this is your first memory foam mattress, you may still be adjusting to the unique "dead feeling" of a slow-response foam. You can learn more about memory foam's viscoelastic properties from Phoenix's article, "Mattress Comfort Layers-Memory Foam" . I'm sorry to hear that you both continue to have back pain. It may be worthwhile for you to photograph the other in your preferred sleeping positions, noting how your body aligns itself with the pillows you are using and checking for proper alignment. I discussed this process in an earlier post today, you can see a graphic discussing alignment here . Hope this helps some, and good luck with your new mattress ;) .

Back pain, is it new mattress or pillows? 25 Oct 2021 04:26 #3

Sensei, thank you very much for reading this and for all the help you all provide here!

Before this we used a roughly 10-15 year old mattress. I am not sure of the material but it seemed like one of the more traditional ones. It was sagging in the middle, hence we decided it was time for a new mattress. This is, indeed, our first memory foam mattress. We use a lot of pillows (of which I tend to randomly grab several at night) and all of them are older. Thank you for the link and resources!
