Anybody prefer innerspring mattresses? 05 Sep 2012 13:19 #1

I had my heart set on a latex mattress but found them to be too soft. I actually prefer the feel of the OMF Orthapedic Ultr Plush matt...Does anyone else find latex to be too soft?

Hi gabodi,

Have you just tried the latex mattresses at Original Mattress Factory or have you tried firmer versions as well from other outlets or manufacturers?

Latex comes in a wide range of firmness levels both in the comfort layers and the support layers. The ones at OMF use 30-34 ILD in the support layers which is softer than many other latex mattresses and the comfort layers are also soft. In addition to this ... they have an inch of soft quilting foam on top and also show their mattresses on an "active" box spring which would make it softer yet. I have often suggested that people test this on top of an adjustable bed which is a fim surface instead of an innerspring because while it would still be softer than many other latex mattresses ... it will feel firmer for most people on a firm base.

There are many people who prefer the feel of latex over innersprings of various types (innersprings also come in a range of firm and soft and there are many different types as well) and a latex/polyfoam hybrid can also make a good choice and the polyfoam support layers can also come in a range of firm to soft.

I thought I should mention all this so you knew that latex has many levels of firmness and layering combinations just like all the other types of foams and components.

The Orthopedic Ultra Plush uses higher quality polyfoam than most other manufacturers but it would still not be as durable as latex over an innerspring.

When it comes to "feel" ... there is never any right or wrong and each person has their own preferences. The goal is always to use the best quality materials that your budget allows no matter what materials or combinations you prefer.
