Can I make a mattress by layering toppers? 20 Feb 2020 11:58 #1

Hello, I had a bad experience with a Canadian organic latex mattress company so I’m starting over. They sent a damaged mattress and it appeared and felt used. It sagged more than the one it was intended to replace. They will not let us return it so we’ll just throw it out. I want to buy online and not spend a ton as we don’t really have money now. Is it a bad idea to layer 2 toppers, like firm, medium to make a medium firm 6 inch mattress?

You can definitely do it but that setup will not be as stiff or durable as a solid latex mattress. If money was short I would still consider it since it's likely far better than what you have currently. Expect to have to do some tuning on layers (trying different densities) to find the right combo that works best for you.

HI Chocolate 101, Most latex mattresses are a comprised of multiple layers within its cover, so you can certainly combine enough material to achieve the support of a mattress. That said, this path will present difficulty. The biggest problem will be knowing what the final combination will feel like. Multiple toppers present the addition of the extra layers of cotton that form the topper covers, these will contribute a subtle, but added complexity to estimating the finished support and comfort. Since Latex toppers are generally not returnable, trial and error testing will be a tough go as well. If you are local to a latex mattress store, it will be worth the time testing and consulting with them.

Thank you. As long as it lasts about 5 years, I think we’ll be good. I am sleeping in my son’s bed and he took my spot on the big bed so we’re not in a huge rush but obviously that’s not a long term solution.

Thank you for replying. Do you know of any good retailers in Edmonton Canada by any chance?

I'm curious about this as well. I've been considering ordering three 3" inch toppers from Sleep On Latex (one firm + two medium) and stacking them all inside a stretch knit mattress protector. The cost of this would be less than other all-in-one mattress options, but the warranty on these particular toppers is only 5 years compared the 10 year protection that comes with a mattress from a company like Spindle et al.

Dormio makes a good point that it would be difficult to select the perfect combo of topper layers on first pass, especially since I have no experience sleeping on latex mattresses and would only be making an educated guess.

In the end, for a first-time latex sleeper like myself, it seems wise to go with a company that offers comfort tuning after purchase to head off any significant comfort problems.

Would love to hear what others think about this.
