replacing pocket coil pillow top mattress with latex or latex-innerspring hybrid

16 Jun 2019 11:41 - 16 Jun 2019 11:44 #1 by dragon123
I've had the Hampton & Rhodes Grand Harbor Ultra Plush Pillowtop mattress for just over 2 years now and the pillowtop and/or comfort layers have begun to seriously break down, causing lower back pain. This is a pocket spring mattress with soft polyurethane comfort layers and an ultra plush polyurethane pillow top.

I'm mostly a side sleeper and sometimes a half and half stomach/side sleeper where my legs and hips are in the stomach position but my upper-body is still mostly in a side position. I'm also fairly lightweight at 140 Ibs.

I really liked this mattress when it was new, and I'm looking to find a mattress with a similar feel but built with better materials which won't breakdown in 2 years. I liked how cool it slept (I dislike memory foam for this reason), and I liked that it was cushy enough to not wake up with shoulder pain, but firm enough that my lumbar didn't sink into the bed too much and cause me lower back pain. However now there is a permanent indentation/weakness in the middle of my bed, despite always having a frame with center rail support.

So I'm basically looking for a mattress with a similar feel, but made with better comfort layer materials that won't break down. I was thinking the Luma hybrid slumber system in either medium or plush, but since I have no experience with latex, I'm open to the possibility of prefering a pure latex mattress. I'll be going to try out hybrid vs pure-latex this week, but I was hoping I could get some initial advice on finding a mattress that recreates the experience I had on my current mattress when it was new.

Hello dragon123,
Thank you for reaching out to Luma Sleep! Your Hampton & Rhodes mattress was most likely purchased at Mattress Firm as H&R is a private label brand sold exclusively to Mattress Firm until just recently being sold through Amazon as well. If you have a 2-year old mattress, the warranty on the mattresses is still valid and you should consider making a claim for it to be replaced rather than purchasing a new mattress. While it means you may still have an H&R mattress, you will not have the cost of replacing it, and your mattress will be brand new. H&R mattresses are not known to have high-quality/high-performance components, which is why you are likely experiencing the excess softness and likely also having body impressions. If the body impression is >1.5", you have a verifiable warranty claim. It makes economic senses to explore the warranty option. Do, however, expect to get the runaround as warranty claims are passed through the retailer to the mattress manufacturer.
An ultra-plush pillow top is typically made with lots of low-density Polyurethane foam in both the cover/quilt pad and in the top comfort layer(s). Luma Sleep does not use padding in its mattresses. and will therefore not produce the ultra-soft, feel. Our most plush/soft mattress will be soft and comforting, but will not match the feel inches of low-density PU foams. These foams have no durability as you have discovered.
We suggest that you seek a high-density low IFD memory foam mattress. If it has a thin foam layer in the quilting, all the better. There are several TMU members who may have products that meet your needs. Here's a link to the TMU members who specialize in poly and memory foam products.
Sorry, we could not help in finding a Luma mattress to meet your needs. A open-cell gel memory foam hybrid with a soft, padded quilt cover is more likely to help you as defined your needs at the beginning of your post. There are some gel memory foams that do not sleep hot.

Sweet dreams,

Team Luma
