Do some stores ever sell old models or returned mattresses?

I have a mattress on order from a store that I am not completely happy with. I went to another store and found mattress that I am more comfortable with.

I went back to the first store to cancel the order. They told me the owner of the other store sold older models and returns. They referred to the store owner by name which made their claim plausible. They said she used to work for their store.

I do not know what to believe. The mattress is an Aireloom.

Yes, some stores do sell closeouts (which can still be new and unused) as well as store displays and returned mattresses (which are both used to some degree.) One thing to ask is whether the mattress is actually new since they are by law suppose to disclose if selling used mattresses, and another is whether it's being sold with the manufacturer's warranty with law tag attached. Store displays and returned models are generally sold "as-is" with no warranty so that can be a good indicator as to what you are actually being sold. I have come across some local sources of "comfort returns" and store display Aireloom mattresses in particular who claim to have a connection with Macy's and buys them for resale from them. Hope this helps!

Helpful. Thank you.

I thought it was illegal to sell comfort returns.

Hello jwblue,

Thanks for reaching out to Luma Sleep through The Mattress Underground! There are a few points of clarification to the Sweet Dreams post that are worth noting although there are no uniform standards/regulations that guide a retailer's specific actions:
1. Close-outs = Discontinued models that have not been previously sold. These are not used/returned mattresses. They should have a full warranty.
2. Sale of any mattress that has been returned must have its law tag note that it was previously used/sold. These are sold As-Is
3. Floor sample models are not considered used mattresses but are typically greatly discounted as they are being sold off to make room for new models. These may or may not be sold As-Is
4. Each state has its own regulations re. the sale of used/refurbished products, including some states that have no regulations for re-sale of used products.
Hope this helps.

Yea some stores definitely do this. They call it "refurbished" mattresses. There are people that will take used mattresses and they'll basically replace the the material that touches your body so that it's clean and sanitary of course.

There are no federal regulations that define and/or control matters related to used mattresses.
If controls exist, they are at the state level. The definition of a refurbished mattress is also not defined with any guidelines. It could have had its cover replaced as Elmattress notes, or it could have simply had a cover placed over the entire covered mattress, or it could have new foam components, etc. Here is a link to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) re. Consumer information that is a straightforward overview on shopping for used mattresses.
www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0099-shopping-used-mattresses
Our advice is that, If at all possible, used mattresses should be avoided.
