Looking to compare - Local double-sided with Golden Mattress latex hybrid

Hello,
I'm currently shopping for two mattresses - a king for myself and my wife, plus a full for my daughter. I've been doing my best to educate myself, but still struggle to make good comparisons between my options, so I'm hoping for some expert perspective.

The two kings I'm considering are...
1. A locally-made (Charleston, SC) 13" double-sided mattress called the Beaufain Firm. From the website (link) ...
  • Premium Foam Encased Construction for the Finest Edge Support
  • High Coil Count Spring Unit for Luxurious Comfort and Support (I was told about 900)
  • Premium High Density Filling Material for Long-Lasting Comfort
  • Premium Natural Bamboo Tickings
2. The Reflections Latex from Golden Mattress Company (link)
  • From website: "The 6″ Reflections Latex set is Golden Mattress finest Latex mattress set. Our 14″ thick hybrid Latex mattress has an 8 inch 2-lb. foam core base topped off with 6 inches of the finest quality Dunlop Latex. Dunlop Latex is 100% natural foam rubber. This mattress is covered in a beautiful soft Bamboo cover. Bamboo is eco-friendly product and a fresh and natural choice. It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Perfect for people with allergies."
  • From store sign:
-Two inch quiltflex ultra soft foam luxuriously quilted
-High density foam core with resilient foam comfort layers
-Fiber pads on both sides, and high-density foams topped with 2 inches of Italian latex
    -Soft cashmere wool knit cover
(I've seen this one mentioned a couple of times elsewhere on this site, including a warning from Phoenix about the quilted top version that I didn't fully understand)

3. I'm also sort of considering a Kingsdown Passion (link) . As per the website, it offers...
  • Memory foam with air flow
  • Tri-zone wrapped coils
  • Some other comfort layers

The first two options are very similar in price (about $1,200), whereas the Kingsdown is a bit pricier.

Then for the full bed, I'm considering cheaper versions of all three...
1. The locally-made 11" flippable Beach House (link) . They provide minimal info about this one.

2. Golden Mattress Company's Energie Euro-top (link) . From the website...
Construction features of this one sided series are: 416-13 Gauge High Profile Heavy Duty Double Tempered spring unit. 10 heavy duty double cup edge supports. Insulator pads both sides. Layers of highly resilient foams luxuriously quilted to a tack and jump European Aloe Vera stretch knit cover.

3. A "promo" line of the Kingsdown, which the retailer isn't able to give me a whole lot of info on, aside from saying it has fewer coils than the typical Kingsdown mattresses.

Again, options 1 and 2 are very similar in price (about $450), whereas the Kingsdown is a bit more.

Any and all guidance you can offer will be very helpful. Thank you!

Hello DG02,

Thanks for reaching out to Luma Sleep via The Mattress Underground!
You are comparing 2 very different mattress designs for your master bedroom needs. There is no mention of differences in warranty, comfort exchange/return, etc. so we are assuming the retailer's policies are the same for both mattresses.
The locally-made mattress does not provide any information regarding the densities of the foams used in the comfort and quilting layers. If there were high-density polyfoams, one would assume they would market/promote them. If this is the case, you are likely to experience softening and breakdown of these layers over time. Being 2-sided, you will need to rotate and flip the mattress. This should extend the life of the mattress, but it is burdensome and can be a basis to deny a warranty claim. You make no mention of preference re. comfort on any of the products, so we can only assume you find all of them to be comparable.
The Reflections latex uses 6" of Dunlop latex as the comfort layer (over the 8" base foam). We have a bias for latex, based on the density of the foam and properties of latex compared to poly foams and memory foams, so we are inclined to see this as a superior product. It is also a single-sided so no flipping will be required. Rotating every 6 months is always a good idea.
The Kingsdown model link provides no specific product content information and since it's pricier, we do not have much to add here.
When it comes to the full-size models, these are entry-level products and appear to be fairly comparable. We suggest you lean towards the model with the best comfort with the better warranty/support from the retailer.

Hope this helps!

Many thanks for your comments and assistance Luma Sleep. I now have some additional information to provide, and I'm curious if you have any new thoughts...

In answer to your initial questions...
  • The warranty is better for the locally-made two-sided mattress. It is a full 10 years, whereas I believe the other is 10 years pro-rated
  • Neither offer a comfort exchange/return policy
  • I find both to be quite comfortable

With the locally-made two-sided mattress, I was told, "There are three foams on each side that make up the comfort layers and each has different properties." All have a 1.5 lb / sq ft density.

With the Golden Mattress Company Reflections mattress, I mistakenly provided erroneous information in my initial post. The mattress specifications that I listed from the store sign are accurate, whereas what I copied from the website (and what you commented on) were incorrect. (I got confused because the company has two "Reflections" mattresses, and the one I'm considering is being discontinued and is therefore not listed on the website any longer.) So, the specifications for that mattress are:
  • Two inch quiltflex ultra soft foam luxuriously quilted
  • High density foam core with resilient foam comfort layers
  • Fiber pads on both sides, and high-density foams topped with 2 inches of Italian latex
  • Soft cashmere wool knit cover
So, it's just 2 inches of latex, rather than 6. I called the manufacturer and was told that the foam is 1.8 lb / sq ft density. Also the compression number is 28.

The manufacturer told me the model's being discontinued simply because it's a firmer mattress and he finds there's more demand for those with softer tops. I'm not sure if that should give me buying power at the store (?).

Thanks again for any thoughts you may have!!

Hello DG02,

Thanks for reaching out. The updated spec info makes the pricing more logical. The lack of an exchange/return for refund policy does make your decision a bit more complicated. The locally-made mattress, with a better warranty and the two-sided design, provides you with a bit more features and benefits. Yes, discontinued models do tend to be more negotiable with pricing, once the new models are starting to arrive (Think of negotiating with a car dealer with 2019 models in their inventory).
By finding both models to be physically comfortable to you based on your showroom "test resting", we would recommend the model that provides you with the better "mental" comfort based on the facts you have gained and which one you are leaning towards as you trust your purchase instincts.

Hope this helps!
