Adjustable beds: Difference between L&P S-Cape and 500 series

I noticed that some B&M retailers like Mattress Firm are selling Leggett & Platt adjustable bases in a numbered series such as the "500" model while online retailers and the Leggett & Platt website list them with named models like the S-Cape. The specs seem almost the same. Is there any real difference in these types of models? Is one using lighter materials and thus more UPS/FedEx friendly or something?

Hi skyzen

Welcome to the Mattress Forum! :)

I noticed that some B&M retailers like Mattress Firm are selling Leggett & Platt adjustable bases in a numbered series such as the "500" model while online retailers and the Leggett & Platt website list them with named models like the S-Cape. No, the difference is not weight for being shipped via UPS. Starting in 2015, Leggett & Platt started having different models stocked at their distribution centers for their consumer products division that they wanted to switch their dealers to. But they still continued to produce their old line for larger retailers who still wanted to carry their previous versions. Add into this mix “special” models or slightly different models or models with different names that they can provide to select larger retailers who wish to differentiate themselves or make it more difficult for consumers to cross-shop, and you have a bit of a mess. As this site doesn’t focus upon power foundations too much, Tim at Richmond Bedding is usually a good source for information on Leggett and Platt specifics.

The Mattress Firm (and others) RETAIL models are Leggett & Platt beds built to a "price point". A company like Mattress Firm sits down with L&P and lists the features they want. Leggett gives them a price. They then eliminate features to get to the price point goal they have in mind. This is ALL done to maximize their profit margin. Their goal is to spend as little as possible and charge as much as possible.

The Mattress Firm Model 700 is a current L&P S-Cape 2.0 Furniture Style frame, with an electronics set (controller, motors, remote, etc) from the 3 ~ 4 year older S-Cape Model and the Pillow Tilt Function from the Prodigy 2.0. Then, Mattress Firm sacrificed two memory positions on the remote in order to have the Pillow Tilt control.

We discuss this on our website as well as direct the consumer to an old YouTube video. The video shows the remote Mattress Firm is using and the date we uploaded the video to YouTube. The video is now over 3 years-old and introduced the then-new S-Cape Performance.

You can purchase the latest Prodigy 2.0 for less than the Mattress Firm 700. Same goes for the lates S-Cape 2.0 vs the Mattress Firm Model 500.

I bought a mattress and base on line. I do not like the mattress and it is going back. However I cannot return the adjustable base. It did have a separate price and is labelled Leggett and Platt 1 piece model 850. I did this before I found this site. I plan to purchase a latex in sections from a company listed on this site. (Probably foamsweepfoam) this frame has the two Plastic corners at the bottom. Can these be removed and did I get screwed? It cost approx $1400.00

Sorry, no idea what the Model 850 could be. Sounds like a name a retailer applied to the unit. Pretty common in the retail world.

Best thing to do is find the Serial Number on the frame. Usually 13 digits long with 1 or 2 letters.

Then call L&P at 800-888-3078 to see which model it may be.
