How to position latex mattress components?

07 Aug 2019 23:09 - 07 Aug 2019 23:15 #1 by dryphi
Hi there, long time lurker first time poster.

I recently went through the trouble of "upgrading" my uncomfortable hard mattress. I kept the inner spring, topped it with two layers of latex, and wrapped the whole thing in a Sleep EZ wool mattress cover. It's much more comfortable.

However I never could get the latex toppers to sit perfectly squarely on the bed. The latex is grippy and doesn't really slide around at all. Also I'm afraid to pull it too much or else it might tear. Hence it's difficult to position the bottom and top latex layers so that they're squarely on top of the spring base. No matter how much I played with it the components would always end up slightly misaligned. I finally gave up and just zipped the whole thing up in the cover, but the edges are still a bit uneven. It doesn't affect comfort at all, but I imagine there's got to be a better way to build the mattress.

Are there any secrets you can share about how to better position the latex components? Is there some material (Tyvek or something) that could be placed in between the layers to allow them to slide around until in the correct place then pulled out? What do other people do to position the latex toppers?

Latex layers can be very difficult to position as you've experienced, especially one on top of the other. What's described as the wave technique is best used as described in the following video which I believe you'll find very helpful.

Yes the link posted by Sweet Dreams should be very useful, and we have an assembly video on our website as well if you’d like to check it out - . Following the tips in both videos should be all that you need to get the layer in place properly, but please just keep in mind that if you lay a latex layer down and it looks like it’s a little too big or a little too small, just shake it a bit and it will spring back to its original size.

Awesome thanks I'll try these methods. The buckling method in particular is something I hadn't thought of. I'm by myself in a small bedroom which doesn't help. Also the latex pieces are full-size so positioning them is perhaps a bit more difficult than the half-size pieces shown in the second video.

Another thing I considered was putting a piece of slippery fabric or plastic down and the latex on top to help it slide around. Then when it was in position I could lift up one end and fold the plastic sheet, then lift the other end and pull the plastic sheet out. I thought this might work but didn't have a sheet handy. Still might try it though.

Maybe someone else has some suggestions that might work? If not the videos posted here are very helpful.
