Hybrid or 100% Latex Recommendation

28 Sep 2019 13:19 #1 by lheitzman
Hello- I've been reading and researching on your company website. I'm searching for a full sized mattress for my 4 year old. He seems to like a medium firm type feel. He has previoulsy been sleeping on memory foam. I'm not sure if we should go a hybrid or your 100% latex. We are shopping for a full sized mattress. Many Thanks in advance.

My wife and I are looking for a new California King bed and have really appreciated the insightful guidance on this website, so firstly thanks!

Our decision at this point is whether or not to blow the budget and do a 100% latex bed from Dormio, Ideal Matress, or Soma, or to stick with the more traditional high end pocket coil. What attracts us to these beds is the 20+ year durability, however to get the really plush soft body-hugging feel we like, the mattress we want seems to be in the $5,000+ range. For example, we liked the 11" Nottingham at Dormio which is 2" extra soft (55 kg/m3), 3" soft, 3"medium, 3" firm. Ideal Mattress seems to provide more custom options at a bit better price, since they have the option of a memory foam (2.9 lb/in2) 6" base. Another item that makes us hesitate about Latex is that to achieve the California King dimensions, they need to cut and add a 4" piece which would either be glued or left loose (except Soma apparently cuts theirs from a big enough piece so that isn't the case with them). All latex beds we tried still felt a touch firm and bouncy for my taste, but that could just be because I'm not used to them.

Our other option is to stick with a "luxury" plush version of a traditional pocket spring and 3"+ memory foam euro-top mattress. We know we like the feel and sleep well on these, our only concern is durability, and specifically body impressions. Two examples of the beds we like:
-Kingdown Duet Irving ("regular" $6500 at Sleep Country but can get for $3000)
-Hotel Collection / Aireloom Euphoria ($2800 at The Bay). This one has 1" foam/gel, 1" latex, and 1" foam before the pocket springs. Sale rep obviously didn't know anything about the densities. It's the lowest price but also the one we like the most in terms of current feel.

Happy to hear anyone's thoughts! Is there really such a drop in quality going from 100% latex to a "high end" pocket coil with foam euro-top?

We both have a fairly thin build - I am 6'4 185 lb and she is 5'5 120

Hello lheitzman

If the mattress is for a 4 year old and it were my decision to make, I would choose the hybrid mattress. It’s a fantastic mattress and an outstanding value, and it does have the adjustability that’s afforded to the mattress by its flippable design. If he tries the softer side and it’s too soft, you can flip it over for a firmer feel. Although a layered latex mattress would be perfectly fine for a 4 year old, it may be more money than you need to or want to spend for someone so young who likely doesn’t need or want to adjust the mattress to such a fine degree.

Hi TailRock,

If you’re looking to get responses from the entire Mattress Underground community you may want to post your question in the general forum, but I’d be happy to address your post here if you’d like. Since I haven’t tried any of the mattresses you’ve referenced, I wouldn’t be able to say in advance which one will be best for you. I can say, however, that you will be able to achieve a high level of plushness, contour, and pressure relief with any of those mattresses simply by adding a 3” soft Talalay topper the mattress. Having a top layer that is not encased with the rest of the mattress will allow that top layer enough spatial freedom to move upwards when you lay on it, making for a very plush and enveloping feel. This is what I recommend to customers that are used to pillow top mattresses, memory foam mattresses, or people that are looking for a softer or plusher mattress in general. Regarding your last question, I can’t say that there is any drop in quality with an all latex mattress. In fact, we’ve found all-latex mattresses to be of the highest quality available. There are differences between an all-latex mattress and a latex and coil hybrid, and how you value those differences will determine which mattress is right for you.
