New 10" mattress, inconsistent support, next steps

Hello all,

I'm not that happy with my mattress purchase and I'm unsure of which route to take to alleviate it?

After much research I purchased a 10" Sleep-EZ split-mattress, Firm-Firm-Soft (natural, not organic), all Dunlop. I'm a 5' 10'' 245lb side-sleeper, and my wife is 5' 10" 165lb back/side-sleeper.

We had initially planned on purchasing a spindle mattress, but their customer support told us that because of my weight I needed a 13" mattress, or their 10" plus an additional topper. We went to a SavvyRest showroom, and really enjoyed the firm-firm-soft configuration for both of us. I really liked the plushness of the soft top layer. Spindle doesn't offer a soft-option, so we decided to go with Sleep-EZ as it was more affordable than a SavvyRest. During ordering I was talked out of the 13" and back to a 10".

When we received it, we set it up on some plush carpet and found it softer then the SavvyRest we had initially tried. After setting it up on our wood-slat bedframe, the bed felt much firmer than we had expected, but was comfortable for my wife. After sleeping on it for a couple weeks, I've come to find it very uncomfortable, it's great if I'm sleeping on my back but am completely unable to sleep comfortably on my side.

I've tried stealing the soft layer from my partner's side and doing firm-soft-soft and while it's comfortable for me, I don't find it supportive enough, and sleeping on my side still results with tossing and turning. I don't know how to find the right combination for me.

My current ideas are,
  • Getting an additional firm (or x-firm) to put on the bottom, assuming the spindle guy was right and I need a thicker mattress, i.e. firm-firm-firm-soft
  • swapping out my middle firm layer for a medium or a soft, but think I would still need to get a 4th firm layer for the needed support, i.e. firm-firm-medium-soft
  • get two medium layers, i.e. firm-firm-medium-medium or firm-medium-medium
  • getting a wool topper

Any thoughts, suggestions, or corrections would be appreciated..

Hello mikewolfd2,

Thanks for reaching out! I’ll be happy to help get your mattress dialed in, but would you mind calling our office at 480-966-9282 so we can look up your order and get the complete details? My initial thought is that you’re bottoming out on the soft layer and sinking right down to the firm layers, causing you to interpret the feel of the mattress as being too firm. My thought would be to change the top layer to medium Talalay and perhaps even change the second layer to medium Dunlop or medium Talalay, but a full discussion will help us get the mattress dialed in for you, and this will be much easier to do over the phone. We look forward to your call, and I’m confident that we can get the mattress adjusted to your specific needs and preferences. As a last note, there really shouldn't be a need for you to make the mattress taller, we normally don't recommend more than 9" of latex unless a customer is 300 pounds or more or just wants a taller mattress, but you're welcome to pursue those options if you'd like, just let us know!
