Firmness level (finding the perfect mattress)

there are only 2 densities of microcoils and 3 densities of latex and two densities of support coils. there are 6 different overall mattress feels... extra plush, plush, medium, cushion firm, firm and extra firm. this is achieved by different combinations of the above. sooo... there are the following materials that make them up in varying combos....

SUPPORT COILS (bottom 8" in both pillow top and classic)
--Plush
--Firm

LATEX COMFORT LAYER (top 3" in classic or 6" in pillowtop)
--Plush
--Medium
--Firm

MICROCOILS COMFORT LAYER (top 3" in classic or 6" in pillowtop)
--Plush
--Medium

Because there are only 2 firmnesses of microcoils, the extra firm is not achievable in the classic. and in the pillowtop, the firm and extra firm are not achievable. so these are the available firmnesses....

EOS PILLOWTOP (8"support coils + 2 of the 3" comfort layers)
--Latex (extra plush, plush, medium, cushion firm and firm)
--Microcoil (extra plush, plush, medium and cushion firm)

EOS CLASSIC (8"support coils + 1 of the 3" comfort layers)
--Latex (plush, medium, cushion firm, firm and extra firm)
--Microcoil (plush, medium, cushion firm and firm)

i dont know the makeup of all the combos for the pillowtop, but these are the makeups for the classic...

PLUSH
--Plush support coil + Plush comfort layer

MEDIUM (my combo, my fav)
--Plush support coil + Medium comfort layer

CUSHION FIRM
--Firm support coil + Plush comfort layer

FIRM
--Firm support coil + Medium comfort layer

EXTRA FIRM (only latex because no firm microcoil)
--Firm Support coil + Firm comfort layer

You might be able to interpolate the combos for the pillowtop from this info, but i didn't feel the need (or have the pocketbook) for pillow top so didn't absorb what these combos are.

they used to list what all the combos were on their website but recent website redesign simplified things and doesn't list them. you might be able to use the wayback machine to look at old version of the site if you need the combos for the pillowtop version. or call them.

correction to above info...

looking at their layer swap page, it looks like they now have 3 firmnesses in the Support coils... Plush, Firm and X-Firm

so... not exactly sure how that translates to the makeups i listed above. probably is only used in the EXTRA FIRM LATEX MATTRESS --X-Firm Support Coil + Firm Latex Comfort Layer.

but... if you go to the store, it's interesting to play with the layers and come up with combos they don't list. for example... they didn't used to list a "medium" feel, but in playing around with the different layers i decided i liked the plush support + medium comfort.

You are right about the coils I got the micro coils confused with the support coils.

those combos you’ve listed, with the two 3” layers of latex would be for the pillowtop eos. i only knew and listed the combos for the classic eos which just has one 3” comfort layer. naturepedic’s site doesn’t list extra firm in the pillowtop like you have listed above for whatever reason, but your listed pairings obviously makes sense. i’m guessing because the pillowtop is such a marshmallow of a bed, a typical extra firm mattress buyer wouldn’t consider it extra firm so they leave it off the official record as to no disappoint. but if an in store customer finds it works well for them, they’re happy to oblige.

also... because the microcoils comfort layer only come in plush and medium, the firm and extra firm aren’t achievable in the pillowtop if you’re using microcoils for the comfort layer.

i mentioned this above somewhere, but will mention it again...if possible in your situation, i highly recommend before ordering getting yourself to a naturepedic store. take a vacation to somewhere that has one and play with all they layers. with the pillowtop especially, there are combos they don’t have listed, and maybe even doing one layer of latex and one layer of microcoils could translate to a good feel. and might also convince you that the pillowtop is unnecessary. i think that except in the plush and ultra plush, you can get more or less the same feel in the classic without the added expense of the pillowtop. but i’m a not curvy male at 175. perhaps a curvier or heavier weight body the double comfort layer makes for a more noticeably comfortable bed where i don’t feel the diff.

I don't know if I can be of help but we are in the trial period for two of their mattresses. Well, maybe one, but we may try to talk them into extending the trial on the other due to their sending the wrong product. We have two twinXLs for us on adjustable bases.

My experience is that they don't necessarily send you what you think you are getting. And when it comes it seems to be harder than it should but seems to soften. The problem is this takes up a significant part of the trial period. Especially when the first one that comes is wrong.

I am a side sleeper, 200 lb female. I am currently on the Classic with plush coils and medium microcoils. I found the soft microcoils on the Classic tended to bottom out and made the mattress too firm. However I have only been on the plush/med configuration for less than two weeks and it feels too firm but may soften up. So hard to tell.

My husband, who likes a soft bed, is on the pillowtop with firm coils and two layers of soft microcoils. He likes this bed. I find it too soft and it makes my back hurt.

We have tried many combinations, but only with the microcoils because I am tired of latex smell (having come from a full latex bed for the last 15 yrs).

A pro is that Naturepedic does not smell. A con is they send short mattresses which is frustrating if you are tall. They seem to think it is no big deal to be swapping mattresses, sending them to donation, swapping components etc. It is a pain and the 90 day trial is not long enough to get it right when there are wrong product sent, a break in period and lag period for shipping. Having spend almost $5K and not yet being happy is not a good place to be in.

Just talked directly to Naturepedic and they are going to give me 60 more days to evaluate so I can try all the combinations I want. Phew! I really didn't want to be stuck wtih something I didn't like.

marshmallow... sounds reasonable considering all the rigamarole they've put you through with the incoorect lengths and maybe incorrect firmnesses. they sent me two of their 3 in 1 pillows for the frustration their incorrect directional marking of the support coil cassette. don't particularly like the pillows but it was a nice gesture.

since hubby likes the pillowtop, and you said you bottomed out the microcoils on the config you liked best, mightn't you be well suited for a pillowtop as well? with the double microcoil layers you can probably achieve all sorts of feels in the medium range you seem to be most comfortable in and not bottom it out. that way both sides would be the same height too.

tom... medium / cushion firm are your sweet spot, you might reconfirm your notes on the configs there.... i think you have medium and cushion firm reversed. in their range cushion firm is firmer than medium... it goes ultra plush, plush, medium, cushion firm, firm and x-firm (if xfirm is actually available in PT)
