normal Bought the Parklane Arlington but it must be too soft for us

My wife and I just bought the Arlington bed a week ago, after just a couple short visits to our local Parklane stores. Parklane has a great reputation and that seemed to make it an easy choice to buy from them. Maybe unfortunately as well, it reduced how much time we spent just trying mattresses out overall. We had a S&F latex core bed that was about 12 years old that we replaced. At the time I remember it was called a plush mattress, but definitely not a pillow top, but in my opinion didn't feel firm. We got our new bed and after a week I am sleeping on the floor because it is more comfortable than the bed. My back has never hurt so bad. My wife who already had some neck issues before have only gotten worse. I am thinking it must be too soft as it definitely doesn't feel too firm. I know there is an adjustment period for beds, and many people think initially a bed may be too firm and need to get used to it, but in this case it feels fine when I get in, but I now have major lower back pain. We rent houses on vacation and never have had issues with getting used to a different bed even when we stay there 7-10 days. I don't really feel trying it out for longer is going to help as I don't feel like it is too firm. Am I wrong? I don't want to wreck my back being a trooper for the 3 weeks.

To my questions. My understanding is we have one more shot to find a different mattress at Parklane. It seems we have to go firm or risk still being too soft. My wife is a side sleeper and I am more of a back and stomach so she does need some softness to the bed. The arlington King was a very tight squeeze up our stairs due to only about 70" of height, so I think we risk damaging any offset coil mattress at delivery or go split king(which I think the joint will always annoy me). That pushes us back to latex and also high cost which is one of the reasons we went with the arlington as it felt similar to the alameda for 2/3 the cost. We had tried the crestline before trying the arlington and it seemed very hard, so I was surprised that the website calls it medium firmness. I thought medium firm was better for stomach sleepers, so I can't imagine going firmer than the crestline. I saw we have some options with the Montclair base, then add toppers. How does that work, and how do we prevent being in this situation again? And back to my first question, is trying it longer really going to help us when I can sleep on beds in rental houses for a week with none of these issues?

Hello Not Too Shabby,

I am sorry the Arlington does not seem to be the right bed for you. Because you have contacted me on The Mattress Underground instead of Parklane Mattresses, I do not know the particulars of your sale. Can you please call the main office at 503-612-8442 so we can discuss your options? You do not have to wait three weeks to initiate a comfort exchange.

I saw we have some options with the Montclair base, then add toppers. How does that work, and how do we prevent being in this situation again?

The Montclair is a wonderful option, especially since you don't have a lot of room getting a mattress to your bedroom. The Montclair is made using a 32 ILD 100% Talalay Latex core and a knit fabric to allow you to feel the benefits of latex. The Latex is made by Talalay Global. It is 6" thick as is, and can be used alone, or as part of a sleep system. We have made 3 topper options that you can add for different comfort if needed. We offer a 2" Gel Memory Foam topper, 3" Latex toppers available in a 14 ILD or a 32 ILD and a 1 1/2" or 3" Wool topper. You could each pick the topper that is most comfortable to your different sleep styles.

We had a S&F latex core bed that was about 12 years old that we replaced.

Your body is adjusted for Latex, and because of your space limitations I would suggest visiting the Parklane Showroom again and focusing on just the Montclair without any toppers as a start.

Parklane Mattresses will take care of you; our #1 goal is to have you sleeping soundly on a Parklane mattress as soon as possible. Please give us the opportunity to provide you with excellent Customer Service by dealing with us directly at the number provided above.

Thank you,

Thanks for the information. We purchased from the Washington Sq store, but it was closed Tues-Wed. We will stop by tomorrow and check out the Montclair. I had called as well and received good information, but it was a lot to take in over the phone. Thanks for putting it in writing and filling in some details on the topper options. I had intended to write a more general post about whether it's possible to adjust to a softer mattress, but I couldn't seem to post in the general forum since I am a new member.

Just an update. We went with the Montclair and have had it since Friday. The mattress by itself was too hard for my wife, so she had to have the soft topper. She loves her side. I needed to get up to her level, so I went with Firm topper. I thought I would be safe in terms of not getting something too soft again by going with the firm option. It is definitely firmer than hers, but much softer than sleeping directly on the Montclair. Is the firm topper ILD 32? It seems so much softer than the actual mattress. I have tried sleeping on the topper 3 nights and the mattress by itself for 2 nights. The jury is still out, but my feeling at the moment is I need something firmer than with the topper, but softer than the mattress by itself.

Hello Not Too Shabby,

Both the mattress and the topper are rated as a 32ILD, however there are a few things that could impact the different feel. The mattress is 6" thick, and has a quilted cover that includes a layer of fabric, rayon and a backing fabric. This will make it feel firmer than the topper which is just the latex and the fabric. N4 Latex from Talalay Global has a range of 30.00 - 34.99 on this product. If the feel is different, then I would assume the 6" core was not created in the same batch as the 3" topper, and then the quilted fabric versus the topper which is not quilted could be the difference you are experiencing.
